Introduction: Lymphatic filariasis, a neglected tropical disease (NTD), is a parasitic disease caused by microscopic worms that live only in the human lymphatic system. Mosquitoes, as vectors of lymphatic filariasis, play an important role in the prevention of this disease. The aim of this study was to identify agent, vector, and physical environment risk factors for filariasis in developing countries through a literature review. Discussion: This study was conducted using the narrative literature review method. The main sources for this study were articles from Google Scholar, Research Gate, PubMed, Springer, Scopus, and DOAJ databases. The criteria for articles were published between 2012 and 2022, observational studies including cross-sectional, case-control, and cohort designs, open access, and articles were organized according to STROBE guidelines. This study showed that from a total of 100 articles found, 14 articles met the predetermined criteria. Wuchereria bancrofti is the most common agent of filariasis. Culex and Anopheles are the vectors. The presence of bed nets and sewerage conditions were physical environment risk factors for filariasis in developing countries. Conclusion: Prevention of filariasis can be achieved by using mosquito nets or insect repellent when sleeping at night. In addition, open drains should be cleaned regularly to prevent them from becoming breeding sites for mosquitoes as vectors.

Mosquitoes are insects that are detrimental to human health because they act as disease vectors, such as dengue fever. Surabaya was known for its high risk of dengue fever. This study aims to describe the diversity of mosquitoes and breeding site distribution in Eastern Surabaya. The study was conducted in 2021 during the end of the wet season in different habitat types in the eastern Surabaya (residential, city park, bamboo forest, and mangrove forest). Eggs, larval, and adult-stage mosquitoes were collected and stored in the Entomology Laboratory for morphological identification. Adult mosquito was collected by using a sweep net and light trap method, while the larva and egg were collected incidentally from breeding sites. The diversity of mosquitoes in the Eastern Surabaya was determined by using the Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H’), dominance, species richness (R), and breeding site distribution. Eleven species were obtained in this study, namely Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus, Aedes annandalei, Anopheles subpictus, Anopheles vagus, Anopheles barbirostris, Culex bitaeniorhynchus, Culex pseudovishnui, Culex quinquefasciatus, Mansonia uniformis, and Malaya genurostris. The H’ index of 1.63 indicates the mosquito community was at a moderate level. The R-value of 1.56 indicates a low level of mosquito species richness. The most abundant species was Cx. quinquefasciatus (37.2%). Most of the breeding sites with mosquito larval infested were found in open areas (79.3%). These numbers mean the total of individuals of each species tends to be low and its dominance shows no effect on other species. The data on mosquito species and their distribution in Surabaya could be used as base information for vector control strategies.

Introduction: Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) re-transmission in endemic areas that have completed mass drug administration (MDA) should be a concern. Entomological data are required to support the elimination of LF. This research aims to present bionomic and evaluative evidence of Wuchereria bancrofti in Culex quinquefasciatus in Bekasi. Methods: Entomological surveys were carried out in Jatimulya Village, Bekasi, from October to November 2019. Female Cx. quinquefasciatus were caught using Human-baited Double Net traps (HDNs) both indoors and outdoors over a 12-hours (from 6 PM to 6 AM). Female mosquitos were subjected to ovary dissection to determine their longevity. In addition, the Man-Hour Density (MHD), Man-Biting Rate (MBR), Daily Survival Rate (DSR), and estimated longevity were calculated. Wuchereria bancrofti was detected using the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) on dissected mosquitos. Results and Discussion: In total 673 female Cx. quinquefasciatus were collected. Culex quinquefasciatus' peak landing time was demonstrated between 12 and 3 AM. The values of Mosquito Parity Rate (MPR) and DSR are 22.88 and 0.692, respectively, implying that the estimated lifespan of dissected mosquitos ranged up to three days. The PCR analysis has revealed that none of the 48 pooled samples of Cx. quinquefasciatus are tested positive for W. bancrofti. Conclusion: Although this survey has found non-existent microfilaria in the LF vector Cx. quinquefasciatus, routine vector monitoring, and surveillance are still required to ensure the long-term viability of the LF elimination program.
