Although Manchurian walnut (Juglans mandshurica Maxim) is widely distributed in northeast China, very few studies had been reported on its diversity among different populations. We surveyed 12 J. mandshurica populations in their native habitats across the northeast region of China and profiled 13 fruit morphological traits. We found a large degree of variations for these traits, especially for fruit weight (coefficient of variation, or CV of 22.00%), nut weight (CV of 19.42%), and kernel weight (CV of 19.89%). Statistical analysis showed that a large portion of the total variation can be attributed to within-population variation (66.64%), followed by random error (20.96%). We also comprehensively quantified the nutritional composition including fatty acids, amino acids, vitamins, and micronutrients. Similar to fruit morphological traits, we found large variation for most kernel components, which mostly can be explained by within-population variation. Further correlation analysis revealed the dependence of some morphological and nutritional traits on key geographical and ecological factors such as latitude, accumulated temperature, and day length. For instance, a significant positive correlation was found between fruit dimensions and equivalent latitude and precipitation, indicating that such factors should be considered for breeding. Taken together, our data provided a rich dataset for characterizing the variation among J. mandshurica populations and a foundation for selective breeding.

Summary The basic aim of the study was to utilise Himalayan Walnut oil (HWO) encapsulated in soy protein isolate (SPI)–maltodextrin (MD)–pectin (Pec) complex as a potential source of omega fatty acids for bread fortification. Encapsulated HWO was integrated with bread for enhanced quality and technological aspects compared to control: it contained protein (9–19%), fat (6–8%), alpha‐linolenic acid (37.50%) with lower carbohydrate (35–42%) content. The baked loaves depicted higher specific loaf volume (3.85–4.85 cm3 g−1) with low hardness (4.24–5 N) due to the presence of hydrocolloids. Crust and crumb colour revealed a significant effect on the appearance of bread, with an increase in the antioxidant activity as assessed by 1,1‐diphenyl‐2‐picrylhydrazyl (80%), 2,2′‐Azino‐bis (3‐Ethylbenzothiazoline‐6‐Sulfonic Acid) (100%) and Metal Chelating Activity (10%). Compared to control, addition of encapsulated HWO increased final product quality by lowering oil oxidation during storage period. Scanning electron microscopic analysis showed intact encapsulated oil bodies in crumb after baking, thereby demonstrating high omega fatty acid retention.

Juglans regia L. commonly known as walnut is used as the most extensive and economical tree in the world. This review aims to study the ethnomedicinal, phytochemical and pharmacological potential of walnut. The literature has been collected from different online sources like science Direct, Scopus, ResearchGate, Google Scholar, PubMed, etc. based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. An ethnomedicinal survey has also been conducted to document the traditional knowledge and uses of walnut among the local peoples of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. On surveying the local peoples in the different major walnut-producing areas, it has been followed that the walnut is locally used as a medicinal, nutritional, and commercial plant to treat common diseases and disorders in the locality. The survey has been conducted first time in the area and no study has been reported till now in the Jammu Division while some work has been reported in the Kashmir Division. Among the many bioactive compounds present in various plant parts, Juglone has been reported a significant anti-cancer compound in treating deadly cancer. This systematic review describes the significant knowledge and traditional information collected on ethnomedicinal uses, phytochemistry, habitat, macro-morphology, area of distribution, and pharmacological importance.
