Diversity and systematics of Haminoeidae gastropods (Heterobranchia: Cephalaspidea) in the tropical West Pacific Ocean: new data on the genera Aliculastrum, Atys, Diniatys and Liloa

Abstract: Four genera of Haminoeidae gastropods inhabiting the tropical West Pacific (Aliculastrum, Atys, Diniatys, and Liloa) were studied based on the combined analyses of live animals, external morphology, anatomy and shells aided by scanning electron microscopy and molecular sequencing. Eleven species are described including two new to Science, namely Atys pittmani sp. nov. and Atys ukulele sp. nov.. “…In the genus Atys the prostate is connected to the side of the penial sheath, a shared apomorphy with the hypothesized sister genus Haminella (Oskars et al, ), in which the seminal duct opens laterally on the distal region of the atrium. Conversely, in other species included in the genus Atys ( A. multistriatus , A. pittmani ) the seminal duct is attached to the distal tip of the penial sheath (Too, Carlson, Hoff, & Malaquias, ). Molecular phylogenetic analyses are not available for these latter two species, but other species formerly included in the genus Atys have been assigned to the genus Weinkauffia Monterosato 1884 ( W. ukulele , W. macandrewii ) based on molecular data (Oskars et al, ).…”

“…Reeve (1868) subsequently mentioned that this species was originally collected by Cuming in the Pitcairn Islands, as the label of the syntypes (NHMUK 20150365) indicates. However, Pilsbry (1933) commented that Cuming's localities were notoriously unreliable, and Tomlin (1934) examined the type series as well as additional specimens from California finding them identical. Therefore, it is likely that the label of the syntypes is incorrect and that the type series of H. virescens was originally collected in the northeast Pacific.…”
