Diversity and spatial and temporal variation of benthic macroinvertebrates with respect to the trophic state of Lake Figueira in the South of Brazil

Abstract: Benthic macroinvertebrates are widely used in evaluations of environmental impact and recommended in biomonitoring, but little used in Brazilian lentic environments. One of the main objectives has been to explain and predict the distribution of those species according to environmental characteristics. Thus, the study aims to characterize the predominant fauna of the Lake Figueira sediment and its relationship with organic matter and depth, analyzing seasonal variation in communities and aiming to select bioind… Show more

“…Despite the abundance did not significantly differ between the sandy and muddy substrates in the study area, other studies show that sediment composition is a major factor in structuring the macrofauna (e.g., Hewitt et al, 2005;Lima et al, 2013) since these organisms have benthic life mode. In this context, we suggest that future studies should be carried out using precise techniques for sediment classification.…”

“…These organisms play critical roles in these ecosystems acting in the energy flow to higher trophic levels and in the decomposition of organic matter (Abílio et al, 2007), among other functions in the ecosystem. The distribution of benthic macroinvertebrate community has been studied, in order to understand the functioning of the estuarine ecosystem and understanding the mechanisms structuring the benthic macroinvertebrate community (Hewitt et al, 2005;Lima et al, 2013;Blanchet et al, 2014).…”

“…This is also the season that is known to match the peak in the abundance and richness of many aquatic invertebrate taxa in the region (Lima et al . 2013). Specimens were collected with a frame dip‐net (30‐cm wide; 250‐μm mesh size).…”

“…Insect collection was carried out in the early spring of 2015 (from September to October; austral season), during the wet phase of the ponds (Bertuzzi et al 2019;Knauth et al 2019). This is also the season that is known to match the peak in the abundance and richness of many aquatic invertebrate taxa in the region (Lima et al 2013). Specimens were collected with a frame dip-net (30-cm wide; 250-μm mesh size).…”
