Diversity and seasonal abundance of anthropogenic spiders (Arachnida: Araneae) in different urban zones of the city of Chilpancingo, Guerrero, Mexico

Abstract: The diversity of anthropogenic spiders in the city of Chilpancingo, Guerrero, Mexico was studied using a systematized collection method in 4 sampling zones: urban with a garden, urban without a garden, suburban, and rural. The total species richness was 63 morphospecies, 49 genera and 21 families. The family Theridiidae had the highest diversity (22 species). The total abundance of spiders was 4,120 individuals, with the highest abundance in the urban zone with a garden (1,163 individuals). The most abundant s… Show more

“…Invasions of alien spiders on the Neotropical Region are yet poor studied. Most of the available papers are descriptive (Carvalho et al, 2007;Almeida-Silva & Brescovit, 2008;Ott & Brescovit, 2013;Pompozzi et al, 2013;Ruiz & Bonaldo, 2013;Taucare-Ríos & Bustamante, 2015) and just a few deals with the relations of the studied species with their environments (Malumbres-Olarte, 2015;Rodríguez-Rodríguez et al, 2015). Nevertheless, the handful studies carried on in Brazil have been showing a large number of invasive or synanthropic spiders and the list of those spiders in Brazilian territory depicts today at least fifty species (Brescovit, 2002;Indicatti & Brescovit, 2008;Simó et al, 2015).…”

“…The sampling was conducted in the rainy season because this is when an increase in the abundance and richness of spiders has been reported in other studies in Mexico (Rodríguez-Rodríguez, Solís-Catalán, & Valdez-Mondragón, 2015;Valdez-Mondragón, 2006). Also, the reproduction of most of the species occurs in this season, being a period where the presence of food is constant (Nogueira, Pinto da Rocha, & Brescovit, 2006).…”
