Altitude is one of the factors that decrease butterfly diversity due to the different types of habitats. Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park is one of the places at different altitudes, such as Situgunung Resort. This study aimed to investigate butterfly species' diversity, richness, and evenness at three altitude levels. This study was completed in October 2019 at altitudes 750, 850, and 950 meters above sea level (masl). Butterfly inventory (diversity) data were collected using the transect method, and data on habitat characteristics were acquired through direct observation. The richness, diversity, evenness, and community similarity of butterfly species and the biotic and abiotic habitat characteristics were then analyzed. The result showed 51 butterfly species at Situgunung Resort, Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park. The highest diversity index and richness index were found at an altitude of 750 masl (3.22 and 7.91) and the lowest at 950 masl (2.46 and 3.98). The highest evenness index was found at 750 masl, while the highest similarity community index was found at altitudes 750 and 850 masl. The relation between altitude and butterfly diversity is that the higherthe altitude, the lower the butterfly diversity.

Las especies emblemáticas son aquellas que por su valor biológico, ecológico, cultural o antrópico, pasan a formar parte del patrimonio ambiental común a todos los habitantes de un determinado territorio. El objetivo de la investigación fue listar las especies de lepidópteros carismáticos de interés para el turismo en el Recinto Pisloy, del cantón Jipijapa, de la provincia de Manabí. Se realizó el inventario mediante la revisión bibliográfica, talleres, entrevistas y la observación de campo. Las especies identificadas fueron clasificadas por su belleza, diversidad o endemismo, y por sus características ecológicas o por su valor cultural. Se obtuvo un litado de 67 especies, de ellas 25 constituyen las de mayor interés para el turismo. Las especies de mayor puntaje por los componentes biológicos, culturales y estéticos fueron Oleria Makrena, Dynamine postverta postverta, Colobura dirce, Papilio polyxenes, Eueides aliphera, Heliconius melpomene cythera, y Melanis leucophlegma. Se propone un plan de visita y observación de lepidópteros que permite la conservación de las especies y, a la vez, contribuye al desarrollo de la industria turística a nivel local.

Understanding the factors that influence the diversity and distribution of butterfly species is crucial for prioritizing conservation. The Eastern Ghats of India is an ideal site for such a study, where butterfly diversity studies have yet to receive much attention. This study emphasized the butterfly assemblages of three prominent habitats in the region: open forests, riparian forests, and dense forests. We hypothesized that riparian forests would be the most preferred habitat for the butterflies, as they provide suitable microclimatic conditions for butterflies. The study collected samples for 35 grids of 2 × 2 km2 for each habitat during the dry months (December–June). We considered the relative humidity, temperature, light intensity, elevation, and canopy cover to assess their influences on butterfly richness and abundance. We also considered the impact of disturbances on their distribution. We used structural equation modeling and canonical correspondence analysis to quantify the correlation and causation between the butterflies and their environment. The study recorded 1614 individual butterflies of 79 species from 57 genera and 6 families. During the study, we found that temperature was the most significant factor influencing butterfly richness. Relative humidity was also important and had a positive impact on butterfly richness. Riparian forests, where daytime temperatures are relatively low, were the most preferred microhabitat for butterflies. Open forests had greater species diversity, indicating the critical significance of an open canopy for butterflies. Though riparian forests need greater attention concerning butterfly distribution, maintaining open and dense forests are crucial for preserving butterfly diversity.
