Diversity and Adaptation of Currently Grown Wheat Landraces and Modern Germplasm in Afghanistan, Iran, and Turkey

Abstract: Collection of wheat landraces (WLR) was conducted in Afghanistan, Iran, and Turkey in 2010–2014. A representative subset of this collection was used in the current study and included 45 bread wheat landraces from Turkey, 19 from Iran, and 20 from Afghanistan. This material was supplemented by 73 modern cultivars and breeding lines adapted to semiarid conditions and irrigated conditions. Overall, 157 genotypes were tested in Turkey in 2018 and 2019 and in Afghanistan and Iran in 2019 under rainfed conditions to… Show more

“…Examining plastic responses of wild crop ancestors and landraces to stresses they may encounter in their native environments may provide insight into potentially adaptive plastic responses for fitness. For example, several wheat landraces may be adapted to dry and hot conditions ( Morgounov et al , 2021 ). Therefore, plastic responses of these wheat landraces to drought and heat may provide insight into potentially adaptive plasticity that may not be present in modern cultivars.…”

“…Often, landrace populations can vary by country of origin [ 6 , 8 , 9 , 68 ], as well as between countries [ 82 ] for accessions with the same common name but a different USDA reference (PI/Cltr number) or local reference. Such populations are frequent in the Mediterranean region.…”

“…In 2011–2014, International Winter Wheat Improvement Network (IWWIP) based in Turkey, collected wheat landraces (LR), which were evaluated, and superior landraces multiplied for seed deliveries to farming communities assuring their continuous cultivation and use in breeding 6 . The LR collection was sampled from four provinces in Turkey, two provinces in Iran and Afghanistan.…”
