Drawing on thirty in-depth interviews with faith leaders in the UK (including Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, and Sikhism), we examine the diverse ways religious groups reorient religious life during COVID-19. Analysing the shift to virtual and home-based worship, we show the creative ways religious communities altered their customs, rituals, and practices to fit a new virtual reality amidst rigid social distancing guidelines. This study offers a distinctive comparative perspective into religious creativity amidst acute social change, allowing us to showcase notable differences, especially in terms of the possibility to fully perform worship online. We found that whilst all faith communities faced the same challenge of ministering and supporting their communities online, some were able to deliver services and perform worship online but others, for theological reasons, could not offer communal prayer. These differences existed within each religion rather than across religious boundaries, representing intra-faith divergence at the same time as cross-faith convergence. This analysis allows us to go beyond common socio-religious categories of religion, while showcasing the diverse forms of religious life amidst COVID-19. This study also offers a diverse case study of the relationship between religions as well as between religion, state, and society amidst COVID-19.

Although religion once played a central role in sociological inquiry, today it has fallen from prominence and now occupies a marginal space in the field. Sociologists of religion suggest that this neglect can be explained by the unusual irreligiosity of academia. However, some are hopeful that changes to graduate training and other institutional interventions can overcome this propensity and encourage more sociological engagement with religion, one of the most influential forces in contemporary society. Drawing on a new dataset of 473 sociology graduate students in the top-25 departments in the United States, we assess how personal religiosity and departmental support for religious inquiry predict sociological engagement in the field of religion. We show that sociology graduate students differ substantially from their age cohort in terms of religious affiliation and behaviors. Personal religiosity is a strong predictor of the decision to study religion and the overall perception of the relevance of religion in contemporary society. Coming from a department where religion is discussed, faculty pursue research on religion, and there are opportunities to specialize predicts the perception of religion’s relevance, but only for the least religious students. Our findings contribute to the understanding of sociological knowledge creation and how individual and institutional proclivities—together—shape what we deem important enough to study.

Previous researchers find that the existence of green organizations is very important as it not only can overcome environmental pollution but also has a positive impact on organizational management by helping to reduce costs, increasing profitability, and overcoming global competition. Hence, the need to create green organizations is becoming more critical because of the increase in worldwide environmental pollution including the air, water, and sound pollution. Fortunately, previous researchers also find that green organizational leadership is the key to create successful green organizations. However, green organizational leadership from Islamic perspective have not been discussed yet although researchers have predicted that most of the human population in the worldwide are estimated to be Muslims by the year 2070. Hence, this paper aims to develop the Islamic Concept of Green Organizational Leadership Model (ICGOLM) as a new model that can be referred to develop green organizational leaders from Islamic perspective. Using literature review, the ICGOLM hypothesized that green climate psychology mediates the relationship between Islamic concept of green organizational leadership (ICGOL) and strategic green behaviour. Additionally, the ICGOL comprises six competencies including the intellectual, professional, moral, social, emotional, and Islamic competencies. The model is beneficial to develop action plan and intervention, government policy and rules, and initiative to create successful green organization especially in Muslim countries. However, the ICGOLM model should be tested further using empirical study.
