Diversifying autism neuroimaging research: An arterial spin labeling review

Abstract: Cognition and brain homeostasis depends on cerebral blood flow to secure adequate oxygen and nutrient distribution to the brain tissue. Altered cerebral blood flow has previously been reported in individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum condition in comparison to non-autistics. This phenomenon might suggest cerebral blood flow as a potential biomarker for autism spectrum condition. Major technological advancement enables the non-invasive and quantitative measurement of cerebral blood flow via arterial spin l… Show more

“…While timing and extent of structural and perfusion changes in the hippocampus may differ between subjects with psychosis and individuals with schizotypal traits, our study suggests that this link is also relevant in autism albeit with a different pattern. For example, reports of increased hippocampus perfusion in autism are less consistent [ 48 , 99 , 100 ]. Yet, changes in excitation and inhibition are capable of shifting the balance between factors that define the metabolic cost of a brain region as well as the formation of axonal connections, and ultimately volume [ 48 , 99 ].…”

“…32 Further, intranasal treatment with oxytocin increased blood flow across social processing brain regions 33 and monitoring vascular metrics has been proposed as a biomarker for social interactions. 34 To address the paucity of knowledge linking physiological CBF, underlying angioarchitecture, and social behavior deficits after moderate TBI, we undertook a longitudinal study in adult male mice. Specifically, we tested the hypothesis that long-term cerebrovascular deficits facilitate social dysfunction.…”
