Diverse types of epineural conduits for bridging short nerve defects. An experimental study in the rabbit

Abstract: In this study the process of peripheral nerve regeneration through an epineural flap conduit was examined using four groups of 126 New Zealand rabbits. There were three study groups (A, B, and C) and 1 control group (D). A 10-mm long sciatic nerve defect was bridged either with 3 variations of an epineural flap (Groups A, B, and C) or with a nerve autograft (Group D). Animals from all groups were examined 21, 42, and 91 days postoperatively to evaluate nerve regeneration employing light microscopy and immunocy… Show more

“…Our laboratory has previously established a rabbit sciatic nerve model for studying nerve regeneration through an epineural flap conduit across a short nerve gap (10 mm). 21 According to this study, nerve regeneration through the epineural conduits was comparable with those provided by nerve grafting. Despite favoring results of this study, 21 the challenge of accelerating nerve regeneration still exists.…”

Despite favoring results of this study, 21 the challenge of accelerating nerve regeneration still exists. The purpose of this experimental project was to study the effect of direct administration of NGF into an epineural conduit across a short nerve gap (10 mm) in a rabbit sciatic nerve model.…”
