Diverse Colletotrichum species cause anthracnose of tea plants (Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze) in China

Abstract: Anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum is one of the most severe diseases that can afflict Camellia sinensis. However, research on the diversity and geographical distribution of Colletotrichum in China remain limited. In this study, 106 Colletotrichum isolates were collected from diseased leaves of Ca. sinensis cultivated in the 15 main tea production provinces in China. Multi-locus phylogenetic analysis coupled with morphological identification showed that the collected isolates belonged to 11 species, includin… Show more

“…Colletotrichum siamense was originally described as a pathogen of coffee berries in Thailand (Prihastuti et al, ), but this species is biologically and geographically diverse and attacks many hosts across several tropical and subtropical regions (Weir et al, ). In addition to infecting coffee, C. siamense a wide host range, including on fruit of Persea americana, Carica papaya and Capsicum annuum , leaves of Hymenocallis americana , Hevea brasiliensis and Camellia sinensis , and seed of Dioscorea rotundata (Liu et al, ; Wang et al, ; Weir et al, ). It has been confirmed that C. siamense can infect more than 60 plant species worldwide (Ji et al, ).…”

“…The fungus C. fructicola is both a pathogen and an endophyte of several plant species, while C. camelliae was only isolated as a pathogen of Ca. sinensis in previous studies [22,23]. The interaction of tea and C. camelliae would be a useful pathosystem to elucidate various aspects of woody medicinal plant-fungi interactions.…”
