Ash gourd (Benincasa hispida) is a cucurbitaceous crop cultivated as an edible vegetable rich in vitamins, minerals, dietary fibers and antioxidants. In a field survey conducted in the Udumalpet region of Tamil Nadu during 2019, the incidence of mosaic disease on ash gourd crop was observed to be 75%. The DNA-A and DNA-B components of begomovirus genome have been identified as associated with this disease. Both the cloned DNA-A and DNA-B genomic components shared highest pairwise sequence identities with the isolates of tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus (ToLCNDV), a bipartite begomovirus. Recombinant analysis showed that both the components are possibly evolved through intra-species recombination between ToLCNDV isolates. Tomato leaf curl Bangladesh betasatellite (ToLCBB) is not naturally associated with this sample. The results of infectivity studies on ash gourd and other cucurbitaceous crops demonstrates the Koch’s postulates, when co-inoculation of DNA-A and DNA-B of ToLCNDV was undertaken. However, the inoculation of non-cognate ToLCBB along with DNA-A and DNA-B enhances the symptom expression and reduces the time taken for symptom development. Thus, Koch’s postulates were proved for these virus complexes on cucurbitaceous crops. Furthermore, an enhanced accumulation of DNA-A component was detected in the cucurbits co-inoculated with ToLCNDV and ToLCBB. This report highlights the importance of investigating the spread of these disease complexes with other cucurbitaceous crops in India.

Whitefly-transmitted begomoviruses are the major threats to the cultivation of vegetable crops worldwide. Begomoviruses infecting vegetables have a broad host range and are distributed among all continents in which vegetables are grown in open fields and protected structures. In most of cases these begomoviruses are commonly found in mixed infections of more than one virus leading to the emergence of new variants/species which is found to be adapted to different hosts in various geographical regions. Mainly the evolution of begomoviruses occurs through point mutation, intra and interspecies recombination and reassortment. The association of satellite molecules such as beta- and alpha-satellites helps in altering the virulence of the helper begomoviruses. Till date there are about 243 begomovirus species are found to be infecting vegetable crops in the global scenario. Further, these vegetable-infecting begomoviruses exhibited diversity in the phylogenetic analysis. They are clustering based on their number of genomic components (monopartite/bipartite), host they are infecting and their geographical origins. The objective of the review is to present the global scenario of the begomoviruses infecting vegetable crops on the aspects of symptomatology, genome organization, taxonomy, diversity, diagnostics, host range and possible management strategies to combat the virus infection.

Mosaic viruses are a constant concern for the agricultural sector. They pose a real threat to both food and ornamental crops, causing huge economic losses and even threatening food security in many regions. In this article, we will present a general overview of these viruses: their characteristics, transmission mechanisms, effects on crops and available control methods. We will see that one of the main difficulties in dealing with mosaic viruses is their diversity and wide host range. In addition, the lack of effective treatment alternatives and the practical challenges of diagnosing different mosaic virus species require constant epidemiological vigilance to prevent their spread. We will first present a general characterisation of mosaic viruses as an informal group of viruses belonging to tens of different taxa. We will then review the main symptoms of mosaic virus infection (hence the name "mosaic"), diagnostic methods, host range, transmission mechanisms and treatment options. Secondly, we will discuss the impact of these viruses on ornamental and food crops. Finally, we will look at some possible strategies for infection management and control.
