Divergent Roles of a Pair of Homologous Jumonji/Zinc-Finger–Class Transcription Factor Proteins in the Regulation of Arabidopsis Flowering Time

Abstract: Flowering in Arabidopsis thaliana is controlled by multiple pathways, including the photoperiod pathway and the FLOWERING LOCUS C (FLC)-dependent pathway. Here, we report that a pair of related jumonji-class transcription factors, EARLY FLOWERING 6 (ELF6) and RELATIVE OF EARLY FLOWERING 6 (REF6), play divergent roles in the regulation of Arabidopsis flowering. ELF6 acts as a repressor in the photoperiod pathway, whereas REF6, which has the highest similarity to ELF6, is an FLC repressor. Ectopic expression stu… Show more

“…Furthermore, an ortholog of the Jumonji N/C and zinc finger domain-containing protein: RELATIVE OF EARLY FLOWERING6 (REF6; MLOC_50345.1) was down-regulated in all three mutant genotypes. In Arabidopsis, REF6 acts as a positive regulator of flowering in a FLC-dependent pathway and may play a role in brassinosteroid signaling (Noh et al, 2004;Yu et al, 2008). Interestingly, VRS1 (AB259783.1) was down-regulated in vrs3(int-a.1), vrs4.k, and int-c.5, suggesting that all three genes act as positive regulators of VRS1 expression in barley.…”

“…50). Moreover, recent studies showed that BR and ELF6 affected flowering time 51,52 , indicating that by recruiting ELF6 and REF6, and functioning as a transcriptional activator, BES1 coordinates flowering and BR signalling pathways. BR signalling pathways have important roles in plant morphogenesis and many signalling stimuli are integrated into BR-mediated plant development 20 .…”

“…For example, the expanded JmjC, response regulator, and B3-domain subgroups share ancestry with the Arabidopsis thaliana REF6; PRR5, PRR6, and PRR7; and VRN1 genes, respectively, which regulate flowering time [35][36][37] , a major trait in plant adaption and survival.…”
