Many physiological processes of domestic animals exhibit daily rhythmicity. The goal of the present study was to investigate, in horses, the existence of the daily rhythms of some haematological parameters: red blood cells (RBC), white blood cells (WBC), haemoglobin (Hb), haematocrit (Hct), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) and platelets (PLT). Blood samples from 6 Thoroughbred mares were collected at 4-hour intervals for 48 hours (starting at 08:00 hours on day 1 and finishing at 04:00 on day 2) via an intravenous cannula inserted into the jugular vein. ANOVA showed a highly significant effect of time on haemoglobin and on haematocrit, in all the horses, on either day, with p values < 0.05. Cosinor analysis identified the periodic parameters and their acrophases (expressed in hours) during the 2 days of monitoring. RBC, Hb, Hct and MCV showed nycthemeral variations included between 17.44 and 22.28, which could suggest the hypothetical influence of various exogenous factors.

This article reviews the literature on the daily rhythm in horses. Many physiological processes have been studied in horses to investigate their daily rhythmicity. In horses many rhythms are driven by an endogenous pacemaker, some of them endogenously generated, others influenced by external stimuli. It then addresses the influence of maturation and ageing, physical exercise and jet lag on these rhythms. The study of daily rhythms in horses is of considerable importance in all aspects of horse management to maintain the natural physiological behaviours of this species, necessary to guarantee the good welfare in breeding and athlete horses. Chronophysiology in horses also has clinical implications, it can influence disease occurrence, diagnostic tests and the effect of medical treatments.

The objective of this study was to describe daily rhythms in leukocyte concentration in calves. The work was carried out during June -July 2004. Six animals were exposed to a natural photoperiod of about 10:14 LD. 5 ml blood samples were drawn from the jugular vein every two hours during the 1st, 4th, 14th, 20th and 30th days of life. Concentration of leukocytes was measured with a hematological counter and analyzed with repeated measures ANOVA and Cosinor analysis. Leukocyte concentration did not show a circadian rhythm at the moment of birth, but exhibited ultradian components that adjusted to daily patterns by the 30th day of life, with an acrophase at 0:35 h and R ¼ 0.97%.
