Objectives The aim of this study was to review and highlight traditional and ethnobotanical uses, phytochemical constituents, IP status, biological activity and pharmacological activity of Viscum articulatum. Methods Thorough literature searches were performed on Viscum articulatum, and data were analysed for reported traditional uses, pharmacological activity, phytochemicals present and patents filed. Scientific and patent databases such as PubMed, Science Direct, Google Scholar, Google patents, USPTO and Espacenet were searched using different keywords. Key findings Viscum articulatum has been traditionally used in different parts of the world for treatment of various ailments. Almost all the parts such as leaves, root, stem and bark are having medicinal values and are reported for their uses in Ayurvedic and Chinese system of medicine for the management of various diseases. Modern scientific studies demonstrate efficacy of this plant against hypertension, ulcer, epilepsy, inflammation, wound, nephrotoxicity, HIV, cancer, etc. Major bioactive phytochemicals include oleanolic acid, betulinic acid, eriodictyol, naringenin, b-amyrin acetate, visartisides, etc. Conclusions Side effects of allopathic medicines have created a global opportunity, acceptance and demand for phytomedicines. Viscum articulatum could be an excellent source of effective and safe phytomedicine for various ailments if focused translational efforts are undertaken by integrating the existing outcomes of researches.

Mistletoes of the Loranthaceae and Viscaceae are hemi-parasitic plants and their preparations in the form of injectable extracts, infusions, tinctures, fluid extracts or tea bags are widely used in various cultures in almost every continent to treat or manage various health problems including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, inflammatory conditions, irregular menstruations, menopause, epilepsy, arthritis, cancer, etc. The medicinal values of some species of Mistletoes (Loranthaceae) growing in the West African sub-region have been reviewed along with some considerations of their chemistries and local uses. These have been compared with Mistletoes (Loranthaceae and Viscaceae) growing elsewhere in Europe and Asia. This review has attempted to update our knowledge on the values of these hemi-parasites which belong to the genera -Globimetula, Phragmanthera, Agelanthus and Tapinanthus, and which have, for years, been seen as only devastating and notorious plants. They are also seen as epiphyting economic, ornamental and medicinal plants. The hemi-parasitic plants (Mistletoes) are not well understood as very little is known about their biology (taxonomy, host/plant relationship, ecology, toxicology, physiological characteristics, etc.) and chemistry (chemical constituents' profile). Some pharmacological studies carried out on the various crude alcoholic extracts and purified fractions have, however, revealed that mistletoes showed hypotensive, hypoglycaemic, antilipidaemic, anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, etc. effects and were non-toxic in experimental animals at the doses used. The findings showed that mistletoes can be very useful as medicinal agents in ameliorating health problems such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, arthritis, pain, cancer and a host of other ailments if properly studied and developed.

Comparing Ranque tubes of circular and square cross section

Abstract. The efficiency of temperature end energy separation is compared for Ranque tubes of circular and square cross section, with the square side equal to the circle diameter. The "square" tube demonstrates approximately two times less efficiency, yet the separation effect still being evidently presented.Experimental study of the vortex effect efficiency in Ranque-Hilsh tubes is presented. The insufficience of the available experimental data and theoretical approaches to the understanding of processes inside a vortex tube are well-known [1]. Systematic and detailed experiments are now strongly needed for verification of theoretical models, the techniques being preferable that do not or just slightly disturb the flow. So, the use of optical diagnostic has allowed a considerable progress in the study of inside swirling flow [2][3][4][5]. In [2] by means of Gilbert optics the existence of a large-scale vortex structure in the form of a double spiral in the field of optical phase density was for the first time diagnosed. The spiral arises on a plane end cover at the hot exit and propagates along the axis in the cold exit direction. In [3][4] an attempt was made to diagnose this structure by means of LDA. The sufficient nonstationarity of temperature and velocity was showed. While in [5] a circular tube is investigated, in [2-4] the tube was studied with square cross section all along for the convenience and delicacy of optical diagnostic. It was found that in spite of such a modernization the Ranque effect is distinctly manifested though the tube does not show any record features.At this stage, the authors proceed to investigate the velocity fields inside the same tube by means of optical field diagnostic -PIV [6]. At that the first step is a detailed investigation of tube efficiency in a wide region of regime parameters for the square tube and comparison of results with a circular tube with the diameter defined as that of inscribed circle.It should be noted that a significant amount of new publications has appeared in recent times with detailed description of certain vortex tube designs and corresponding efficiencies, such as, for example, [7][8]. The data is supposed to help not only to optimize the technical use but also to verify theoretical models. In our case the detailed data is needed as a road map guiding the field measurements inside the tube.
