Diuretic and Laxative Activities of Moringa Oleifera Seeds and Pods in Mice

Abstract: Moringa oleifera (Family- Moringaceae) is a well-known vegetable for its health benefits for thousands of years having diverse nutritional bioactive constituents. Phytochemical analysis of ethanolic extract of this plant indicated the presence of carbohydrate, reducing sugar, combined reducing sugar, glycosides, tannins (absent in seeds), alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins and steroids. In diuretic activity test, the extract showed a significant (p<0.001) effect at the dose of 200 & 400 mg/kg body weight i… Show more

“…Furthermore, some diuretic indices such as natriuretic, kaluretic, and saluretic were calculated to hypothesize the mechanism of such diuretic action and the results supported that the tested samples mechanistically are as like loop diuretic drugs ( Table 3 ). Some earlier scientific reports published that loop diuretics exert their action by modifying natriuresis and kaluresis through inhibition of Na + /K + /Cl − symporter in the nephron's loop of Henle [ 5 , 36 ]. Clinically, loop diuretics are prescribed for treating or managing patients with salt and water overload (pulmonary edema, cardiac edema, hypertension, etc.)…”

“…composition of the renal tubular fluid. These types of drugs are used in many clinical situations such as edema, hypertension, heart failure, renal obstruction, nephrotic syndrome, ascites, obesity, and pulmonary congestion [ 5 ]. Laxative drugs are used to manage constipation which is defined as the hardening of stool; resulting in obstruction in defecation.…”

“…The mixture was kept away for 14 days, with occasional shaking and stirring. Subsequently, the solution was filtered using Whatman filter paper [17] . Following the evaporation of the filtrates, the resulting concentrates, with a yield of 3.84%, were recognized as crude ethanolic extracts derived from the leaves of P. paludosa.…”
