Dither signal effects on quenching chaos of a permanent magnet synchronous motor in electric vehicles

Abstract: This investigation confirms and controls chaotic motion in a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) system in electric vehicles. Complex nonlinear behaviors may be observed over a range of parameter values in the bifurcation diagram. The method of the Lyapunov exponent is adopted to identify the onset of chaotic motion and verify the analysis. Finally, a technique for effectively controlling a chaotic PMSM system will be offered. It involves applying an external input, called a dither signal, to the system.… Show more

“…Tung and Chen [29] presented an approach for identifying a closed-loop DC motor system with unknown parameters and nonlinearities; in addition, they investigated why dither signals eliminate possible limit cycles in the system. Furthermore, Chang et al [30], used dither signals to suppress a chaotic permanent magnet in the synchronous motor of an electric vehicle.…”

“…Because dither is an external signal and does not require measurements, its main advantage is simplicity. Dither has also been successfully applied in actual nonlinear systems [27][28][29][30]. For example, Fuh and Tung [27] used dither signals to convert chaotic motion to a periodic orbit in circuit systems.…”

“…16 As PMSMs have advantages of high energy density, wide speed range, large torque moment of inertia and good efficiency, they are one of the most widely used motor types in electric vehicles. 24 Accurate PMSM model is a necessary prerequisite to analyse the vibration characteristic of the motor mount system. However, the commonly used linear model of PMSM is established with ignoring magnetic saturation and assuming that the magnetic field produced by the permanent magnet is sinusoidally distributed in the air gap.…”

“…The transfer function of PMSM drives system with feedforward complete decoupling is developed based on the small-signal model in [13], and the stable operation range of system and PI parameter of flux weakening control are analyzed by Routh stability criterion. In [14,15], the unstable dynamic behaviors of PMSM, used in EV, without external inputs or load are observed over the entire range of singleparameter values in the bifurcation diagram. The chaotic motions (unstable) of the PMSM during the EV startingrunning process with and without large amplitude oscillation load are discussed in [16], respectively.…”
