Tackling drug and alcohol misuse in Brazil: priorities and challenges for nurses

Oliveira & Villar (1996) in an investigation conducted in the psychiatric emergency department at the Hospital of Clinics of Ribeirâo Preto, University of São Paulo, found that in the period 1988–90, 576 cases were diagnosed as having alcohol dependence syndrome, 379 cases with alcohol psychosis, and 127 cases with alcohol dependence (American Psychiatric Association 1994). A majority of the attendees were male with an age range from 25 to 44 years.…”
