An abundance of macrophytic material could explain the elevated DOC concentrations in comparison to another field study in the Gulf of Mexico (0.24 to 0.58 mg C l -1 ; Hung et al 2001) and bacterial decomposition of POM could account for a low signal-to-noise ratio of DOC.
