This investigation was carried out to study the effect of some chemical constituents (total phenols, total carbohydrates, total proteins and pH values) of three citrus tree host leaves (sweet orange, navel orange and mandarin) on the population density of Aonidiella aurantii (Maskell) and Chrysomphalus aonidum (L.) in relation with prevailing temperature and relative humidity in different citrus orchards at Minia Alkamh district, Sharkia Governorate, Egypt during two successive years extended from December 2012 to November 2014. The results showed that sweet orange appeared to be the most susceptible citrus tree hosts to infestation by the scale insects followed by navel orange and mandarin at the least. The population density of A. aurantii had three peaks on the three citrus tree hosts in the two years. Also, C. aonidum recorded three peaks on the navel orange in the two years, while on sweet orange indicated four peaks occurred during the first year and three peaks of densities were obtained during the second one. On mandarin trees, three and four peaks were observed in the aforementioned years, respectively. The highest population was exhibited by A.aurantii in the first peak by 636 insects/300 leaves on sweet orange on February in the second year while, it was recorded by C. aonidum in the third peak by 59 insects/300 leaves on October in the same year. There was a positive relationship between both of total carbohydrates and total proteins and the population density of A. aurantii and C. aonidum on sweet orange, navel orange and mandarin, while no relation was found between each of total phenols and pH values and the infestation level by the two scale insects.

Citrus farming is a major source of revenue for large and small-scale farmers in Kenya. Citrus production is confronted with threats from pests and diseases. Surveys of citrus farms in Kilifi, Kwale, Machakos and Makueni counties, Kenya in July/August (dry season) and in November/December (wet season), 2019 were conducted to identify scale insect pests (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha) attacking the trees (Sapindales: Rutaceae), and their related biota. A total of 22 scale insect species belonging to four families, namely Diaspididae (armoured scales), Coccidae (soft scales), Pseudococcidae (mealybugs), and Monophlebidae (giant mealybugs) were found infesting citrus trees in the two regions surveyed. Among the scale insects reported, four species were newly introduced in Kenya; three armoured scales Parlatoria ziziphi (Lucas), Parlatoria pergandii (Comstock), Aonidiella comperei (McKenzie), and a soft scale, Pulvinaria polygonata (Cockerell). The scale insects were closely associated with predators (coccinellids and lacewings) and attendant ants. This information will be helpful in the development of efficient management strategies against the scale insect pests, thus improving citrus production in Kenya. The scale insect pests identified in this study will be useful to plant quarantine facilities in Kenya to help to prevent and detect accidental introductions of exotic scale insect species.

The black parlatoria scale insect, Parlatoria ziziphi (Lucas) is one of the most important armored scale insect infesting citrus trees. This investigation was conducted at Inshas El-Raml district, Sharkia Governorate throughout the two seasons 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 to study some ecological aspects of this scale insect on navel orange trees. This study showed that the seasonal activity of this insect was more abundant in the first season than in the second one, due to the relation with its associated parasitoid. The P. ziziphi had three generations and two peaks of the total alive stages during winter and autumn seasons throughout the two years of investigation. Also, the increase or decline of populations was correlated with some climate factors as temperature, relative humidity and light intensity and also influenced by some chemical components in navel orange trees. These results can be beneficial when developing an integrated program for control this pest without the use of pesticides that may pollute the environment.
