Distribution of toxin genes among different spa types and phage types of animal Staphylococcus aureus

Abstract: We analyzed distribution of toxin genes (sea-seo, eta, etb, tst, lukS/lukF-PV) among spa types and phage types of 39 Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) isolates from healthy and diseased animals. All isolates turned out to be mecA negative (MSSA). Nine spa types were identified: t144 and t723 (dogs), t084 (dogs and pigs), t5447 (cat), t1491 and t008 (pigs), t002, t127 and t3478 (poultry). Seven phage types were detected, enclosed within four phage groups: I (cat), II (dogs), III (pigs) and mixed group (dogs and… Show more

“…Hemolysins, especially α-hemolysin, are important virulence factors in several animal models of infection, including pneumonia and mastitis [ 81 ] The presence of the hla , hld , and hlb genes and the enterotoxin gene cluster has also been shown in S . aureus strains from cases of mastitis in cows in Poland [ 82 , 83 ].…”

“…The presence of this toxin is also related to the etiology of many other diseases or syndromes in humans [ 73 ]. The tst gene has not been detected so far in isolates from companion animals and livestock (dogs, cats, pigs, or chickens) in Poland [ 82 ], but it has been present in isolates from neonatal intensive care units in Polish hospitals, usually in combination with the enterotoxin gene cluster ( egc ) and egc- like variants [ 85 ]. This phenomenon may indicate that the presence of S .…”

“…Infections by et-positive Staphylococcus intermedius in dogs can also cause a pathology that resembles SSSS and EE [45]. A previous study described the distribution of toxin genes among phage types of animal isolates of S. aureus and the canine isolates of phage group II that harbored the eta gene [46].…”

“…Our Polish Reference Center for Staphylococci is a leading center for bacteriophage typing of S. aureus strains involved in various infections, with considerable achievements in this field [ 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 ]. Recently, the oral cavity has gained attention as a reservoir of antibiotic-resistant S. aureus strains and a source of their spread to other anatomical regions [ 17 , 18 , 19 ].…”
