Abstract:Comprehensive carbon chemistry data were measured from the mainstream of Kuroshio, off eastern Taiwan, in May 2014. Results indicated that variations of pH@25 • C, POC, Ω Ca , DIC, pCO 2 and RF were closely related to the characteristics of various water types. Phytoplankton photosynthesis played important roles in DIC variation in Kuroshio Surface Water (KSW), whereas the DIC variation in Kuroshio Subsurface Water (KSSW) was probably influenced by the external transport of DIC-enriched water from the South China Sea. Vertical profiles of hydrological parameters and carbonate species indicated that the Kuroshio Current off eastern Taiwan could intrude into the ECS shelf as far as 27.9 • E, 125.5 • N in spring. What is more, the KSW, KSSW and Kuroshio Intermediate Water (KIW) could convey DIC into the East China Sea (ECS) with flux of 285, 305 and 112 Tg C/half year (1 Tg = 10 12 g), respectively. The relevant flux of POC was 0.16, 2.93 and 0.04 Tg C/half year, respectively. Consequently, the intrusion of Kuroshio could probably exert a counteracting influence on the potential of CO 2 uptake in the ECS, which needs further study.

Temperature, salinity, chlorophyll a (Chl-a), nitrate, and sea-air differences of CO 2 partial pressure (ΔpCO 2 ) were extensively investigated in the northern East China Sea (ECS) during seven research cruises from 2003 to 2009. The ΔpCO 2 showed large intraseasonal variation in the spring and summer. In spring, the areal mean ΔpCO 2 in May 2004 was almost half of that in April 2008, probably associated with differences in sea surface temperature (SST). In summer, the areal mean ΔpCO 2 in August 2003 was also twice as large as that in July 2006. In addition, ΔpCO 2 exhibited large seasonal variation with positive values in autumn and negative values in other seasons. The positive ΔpCO 2 in autumn was ascribed to vertical mixing with CO 2 -enriched subsurface waters and relatively high SST in this season. The annually integrated sea-air CO 2 flux in the northern ECS was -2.2 ± 2.1 mol m -2 yr -1 , indicating CO 2 absorption from atmosphere to the sea, which was more than two times lower than the previous estimate (Shim et al. 2007) reported for the same region. This large difference was presumably responsible for the underestimation of winter CO 2 influx by Shim et al. (2007) and the large interannual variation of CO 2 flux. The CO 2 influx in the ECS was twice that estimated for continental shelves worldwide, suggesting that the ECS acts as a strong sink of atmospheric CO 2 compared to other continental shelves.

The Yellow River of China runs mainly through an arid and semiarid midlatitude region that has experienced substantial anthropogenic and climatic change. This area includes the carbonate-rich Loess Plateau and carries water of exceptionally high carbonate content. To investigate the processes by which dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) is biogeochemically modified as the river approaches the sea, a multipronged field investigation was conducted in the Yellow River estuary, [2005][2006][2007][2008][2009]. The project included four research cruises (spring and fall), a year of monthly sampling at a lower-river hydrological station (Lijin), and in situ bottle incubations. Our study revealed that 4-11% of the Yellow River DIC was removed from the water column in the estuarine mixing zone and thus was not transported to the sea. DIC removal was greater in the spring and occurred at a higher salinity range than in the fall. As a unique feature of the Yellow River estuary, calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) precipitation was nearly as important as net biological production in the DIC removal. Longer freshwater-seawater mixing distances (and times) and higher DIC concentrations in the freshwater end member also promoted net biological production and CaCO 3 precipitation, thus encouraging DIC removal.
