Distribution of the Red Imported Fire Ant Solenopsis invicta (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in Central Florida Pastures

Abstract: Habitat disturbance has been found to facilitate the introduction of a wide range of species, including the red imported fire ant Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Myrmicinae). Despite the link between S. invicta colonization and disturbance, little is known about how different intensities or types of disturbance might impact S. invicta populations. In this study, we used S. invicta populations in cattle pastures to understand how variation in disturbance type and frequency correlates with the… Show more

“…Once successfully invading novel environment, RIFA colonizes and spreads quickly. At present, RIFA eradication is not possible, so once it reaches high abundance, management will be less effective for mitigating impacts, as with the USA example (Steele et al 2020).…”

“…Some studies discovered that diversity and distribution of ants are most likely to be influenced by the season as ants have different tolerance towards temperatures [14]. Different seasons caused different interactions of ants towards the soil due to the difference of soil nutrients in different seasons [15]. In this study, the presence of rain can hinder the foraging behaviour of these insects, affecting their movement and potentially limiting their access to food resources [9].…”

“…Florida grasshopper sparrow populations persist in a mixture of improved and semi-improved cattle pasture and dry prairie habitats. These habitats in central Florida consistently support moderate to high densities of RIFA (Steele et al 2020). Chemical controls of ants with toxic baits cannot be safely used in proximity to the remaining breeding population.…”
