“…The genus Sporobolomyces is composed of strains mainly isolated from the phyllophane (Bai et al ., 2002). However, a previous study has shown that strains of the genus Sporobolomyces are frequently isolated from marine ecosystems, with the frequency of isolation increasing with increasing distance from the coastline and depth (Hernandez‐Saavedra et al ., 1992). Moreover, yeasts from this genus were found in benthic invertebrates collected from the deep‐sea floor in the Pacific Ocean (Nagahama et al ., 2001b).…”

“…Udeniomyces puniceus was first isolated from a frozen fish in the market in Japan and described as Candida punicea (Komagata and Nakase, 1965). According to Hernandez-Saavedra et al (1992), this species occupied 20% of the isolates from seawater collected in the Pacific Ocean off the west coast of Baja California, Mexico. However, this species has not yet been found in the phyllosphere.…”

“…This species has also been found in other substrates such as air (Hirst, 1953), seawater (Hernandez-Saavedra et al, 1992;Gadanho et al, 2003) and freshwater (Libkind et al, 2003). Molecular phylogenetic analyses have indicated that Sporidiobolus pararoseus Fell & Tallman is the closest teleomorphic relative of Sporobolomyces roseus (Fell et al, , 2000Bai et al, 2002).…”
