Distribution of S-100b protein in normal salivary glands and salivary gland tumors

Abstract: Immunohistochemical studies were performed for the presence of S-100b protein in non-neoplastic and neoplastic salivary gland tissues by the peroxidase anti-peroxidase (PAP) method. Some cases of pleomorphic adenoma were investigated by immuno-electron microscopy. S-100b protein could not be detected in epithelial cells of intercalated ducts, acini, striated ducts and excretory ducts of non-neoplastic salivary gland. However, myoepithelial cells surrounding the acini and intercalated ducts were specifically st… Show more

“…Initially, S-100 protein was the most popular marker for MEC, but subsequent studies found it unreliable, because it can also be expressed in ductal cells 18 . Accordingly, SMA was adopted as a standard marker for normal and neoplastic MEC, but later study showed that neoplastic MEC may not express SMA 19 .…”

“…HARA et al [13] and TAKAHASHI et al [20] found no S-100 protein in epithelial cells of intercalated ducts, acini, striated ducts and excretory ducts. However , myoepithe- lial cells surrounding acini and intercalated ducts were specifically positive for S-100 protein [19][20][21].…”

“…Rare or no staining has been found in oxyphilic adenoma, basal cell adenoma, Warthin's tumor, mucoepidermoid carcinomas and acinic cell carcinomas [13,18]. However interdigitating cells identified as Langerhan's cells, which stained positive for S-100 protein, have been found in the lymphoid component of Warthin's tumor [13,20].…”

“…Most of the acinic cell carcinoma show immunoreactive cytokeratins suggesting the tumor cells as originating from the ductal cells [176]. Immunoreactivity for 5-100 protein has been found in intercalated duct like cells while some studies have suggested no immunoreactivity for the 5-100 protein [82,98,126,199]. Immunoreactive vasoactive intestinal peptide, associated with neuroendocrine or neuroepithelial differentiation has also been reported in acinic cell carcinomas [87,176].…”
