Demand on redevelopment of a closed landfill is increasing due to limited land resources. However, the hazards of a closed landfill remain unknown. Thus, there is a need to assess the health hazard for a closed landfill to ensure its suitability for future development. The aim of this study is to evaluate the distributions and hazards based on soil samples taken from a closed landfill located at Kubang Badak, Selangor, with specific focus on Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals. A total of ten soil samples were collected using hand auger. PAHs were extracted using Microwave Assisted Extraction (MAE) and analysed using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer, while heavy metals were digested with MAE and analysed using Inductively Coupled Plasma. Concentrations of PAHs were compared to guidelines from Canada, Netherlands and Denmark. Concentrations of heavy metals were compared to guidelines from United Kindom.. Results showed that 12 PAHs compounds were distributed consistently except for phenanthrene and anthracene. Most abundant was phenanthrene with an average value of 62.02 µg/kg. Near-ground air (26 substances) and surface seawater (55 substances) concentrations of persistent toxic substances (PTS) were determined in July 2012 in a coordinated and coherent way around the Aegean Sea based on passive air (10 sites in 5 areas) and water (4 sites in 2 areas) sampling. The direction of air-sea exchange was determined for 18 PTS. Identical samplers were deployed at all sites and were analysed at one laboratory. hexachlorobenzene (HCB), hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) as well as dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and its degradation products are evenly distributed in the air of the whole region. Air concentrations of p,p′-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p′-DDE) and o,p′-DDT and seawater concentrations of p,p′-DDE and p,p′-DDD were elevated in Thermaikos Gulf, northwestern Aegean Sea. The polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congener pattern in air is identical throughout the region, while polybrominated diphenylether (PBDE)patterns are obviously dissimilar between Greece and Turkey. Various pollutants, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), PCBs, DDE, and penta-and hexachlorobenzene are found close to phase equilibrium or net-volatilisational (upward flux), similarly at a remote site (on Crete) and in the more polluted Thermaikos Gulf. The results suggest that effective passive air sampling volumes may not be representative across sites when PAHs significantly partitioning to the particulate phase are included.

Residues of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) and their environmental risks in surface sediments collected from marine and adjacent riverine/estuarine areas in the northern Bohai Sea, China, were investigated. Concentrations of RHCH and RDDT in sediments ranged from below detection (\LOD) to 1964.97 ng g -1 dry wt (dw; mean, 92.51 ng g -1 dw) and \LOD to 86.46 ng g -1 dw (mean, 9.23 ng g -1 dw), respectively. Concentrations of HCH and DDT were generally higher in marine than riverine sediments. Concentrations of HCH and DDT residues found in the present study were higher than those reported in marine and river/ estuary sediments from other areas of the world. The source of HCH in sediments could be explained by the large amount of historical use, while DDT seemed to be a combination of erosion of the weathered soils and longrange atmospheric transport. Concentrations of HCH in sediments from the study areas did not exceed sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), with the exception of c-HCH. However, risks posed by concentrations of DDT observed in sediments were found to be moderate to high compared with those posed by consensus-based SQGs. Although the mean sedimentary concentrations of HCH and DDT found in the area of the northern Bohai Sea, China were lower than suggested SQGs in general, their concentrations in some locations were close to or above the SQGs for adverse effects in benthic organisms and, thus, remain a cause for concern.
