A preferential loss of nitrogen relative to carbon during the decomposition of planktonic OM as it sank through the water column and settled down in the sediment results in an increase in the C/N (Gordon, 1971;Müller, 1977;Rosenfield, 1981;Saino and Hattori, 1987).
