Invasions of non‐native fish species are generally associated with human activities that violate historically insurmountable barriers to species on local and global scales. For Pterygoplichthys ambrosettii (Holmberg 1893), invasive to the upper Paraná River basin, informations about introduction and period of occupation are uncertain. Thus, aim of this study was to establish the invasion chronology and the establishment of this species in the Upper Paraná River basin, based on long‐term data (37‐year sampling), in addition to evaluating its current distribution. The results indicate that P. ambrosettii was first recorded in 1997 in the Itaipu reservoir and in 2000 in the Upper Paraná River floodplain. Currently, this species is registered in 118 localities in the basin, and the fact that several of these occurrences were recorded in locals that are not accessible through upstream migration suggests their origin from the aquarium hobby. This study elucidates when and where the invasion process of by P. ambrosettii began in the Upper Paraná River floodplain, and indicates that its broad non‐native distribution has exceeded the limits imposed by the geographical barriers.

Em estudos ao redor do mundo onde, em situações de descarte ornamental, espécies do gênero podem vir a prejudicar ambientes naturais (Garcia et al, 2012;Bijukumar et al, 2015;Wei et al, 2017;Nobile et al, 2018). O aquarismo é um hobby praticado mundialmente com aumento de popularidade no Brasil nas últimas décadas. A soltura de peixes ornamentais em ambientes naturais é equivocada, sendo considerada introdução de espécies e crime ambiental. Dessa maneira, objetivou-se verificar a existência de registros de solturas disponíveis na web, na mídia social Youtube™ no Brasil. A busca por vídeos com situações de soltura ou descarte foi realizada entre julho e dezembro do ano de 2018, totalizando-se 616 horas de busca. Como resultado, obteve-se 48 registros de solturas, sendo as mais incidentes as regiões do Sudeste, Nordeste e Sul. São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo e Rio de Janeiro foram os Estados com maior número de registros. Registrou-se 33 táxons de peixes (18 gêneros e 15 espécies) e dois híbridos, sendo muitas delas espécies invasoras. A maioria dos praticantes não tem conhecimento sobre a ilegalidade do ato ou a possibilidade de impacto ambiental. O perigo das solturas ornamentais quanto à oportunidade de invasão biológica, a pressão de propágulo empregada e os conceitos equivocados sobre ecologia abordados nos vídeos são discutidos. Sugere-se a conscientização dos aquaristas e maior controle sobre o hobby, sendo as redes e mídias sociais uma nova ferramenta para os órgãos fiscalizadores detectarem distúrbios que possam prejudicar os ambientes naturais.

The introduction of invasive species is a significant threat to freshwater ecosystems and is changing the biogeographic patterns of fish species, leading to homogenization of fish fauna. The ability to predict potential invasions is critical in conservation biology to avoid further biodiversity loss. Ecological niche modelling has become an important tool in biological invasion studies. However, some introduced species can spread to habitats that are different from those in their native range. A framework based on niche shifts and ecological niche models was used to show that Pterygoplichthys ambrosettii, an armoured catfish, commonly known as ‘pleco', and native to the middle‐lower Paraná river, has expanded its niche by 27% and is now occupying a new range of environmental conditions. This species has experienced a niche shift from its original habitat and has started to occupy new areas of the Upper Paraná river basin and the São Francisco basin in Brazil. Models built using both native and non‐native areas were not able to predict the invaded habitats, and in either the native or non‐native areas the cross‐validation procedures corroborate the niche expansion hypothesis.
