This investigation determined the frequency of resistance of 84 isolates of Salmonella comprising 14 serotypes recovered from layer farms in three Caribbean countries (Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, and St. Lucia) to eight antimicrobial agents, using the disc diffusion method. Resistance among isolates of Salmonella was related to the country of recovery, type of sample, size of layer farms, and isolate serotype. Overall, all (100.0%) of the isolates exhibited resistance to one or more of seven antimicrobial agents tested, and all were susceptible to chloramphenicol. The resistance detected ranged from 11.9% to sulphamethoxazole-trimethoprim (SXT) to 100.0% to erythromycin. The difference was, however, not statistically significant (P = 0.23). Across countries, for types of samples that yielded Salmonella, significant differences in frequency of resistance were detected only to SXT (P = 0.002) in Trinidad and Tobago and to gentamycin (P = 0.027) in St. Lucia. For the three countries, the frequency of resistance to antimicrobial agents was significantly different for ampicillin (P = 0.001) and SXT (P = 0.032). A total of 83 (98.8%) of the 84 isolates exhibited 39 multidrug resistance patterns. Farm size significantly (P = 0.032) affected the frequency of resistance to kanamycin across the countries. Overall, among the 14 serotypes of Salmonella tested, significant (P < 0.05) differences in frequency of resistance were detected to kanamycin, ampicillin, and SXT. Results suggest that the relatively high frequency of resistance to six of the antimicrobial agents (erythromycin, streptomycin, gentamycin, kanamycin, ampicillin, and tetracycline) tested and the multidrug resistance detected may pose prophylactic and therapeutic concerns for chicken layer farms in the three countries studied.

Distribution and antibiotic resistance of Salmonella isolates from broiler enterprices in TurkeySummary: The aim of the study was to determine the antibiotic resistance of Salmonella serovars, isolated from broiler faeces between years 2012 to 2013. The isolates were obtained from Ankara University Veterinary Faculty, Department of Microbiology culture collection. Total of 267 Salmonella isolates were analysed. All isolates were serotyped previously and tested for antimicrobial susceptibility in the study. Serovar distribution was determined as S. Infantis %77.2, S. Enteritidis %9, S. Typhimurium %6.4, S. Liverpool S.Hadar %1.9, S. Dabou %1.5, S. Kentucky %1.1, S. Corvallis, S. Mbandaka ve S. Onarimon %0.4 by percentage. Resistance rate of isolated serovars to tested antimicrobials were found as; 42.2% to tetracycline, 42% to sulfanamide, 39.9% to trimethoprim, %36.9 to nalidixic acid, 32% to streptomycin, 31.5% to ampicilin, 15.3% to enrofloxacine, 11.5% chloramphenicol, 10.2% to ciprofloxacine, 3.5% to gentamicin, 3% to cefotaxime. Multidrug resistant Salmonella were detected as % 89.51. In conclusion, high antibiotic resistance rates were revealed and S. Infantis was found as dominant among isolated Salmonella strains.

In this study, we described the comparison among pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD), ribotyping, and PCR-ribotyping methods for subtyping Salmonella Enteritidis isolated from an industrial chicken production chain. One hundred and eight S. Enteritidis were isolated at all stages of poultry meat processing plant. These isolates were pheno-and genotypically characterized by using antimicrobial susceptibility test, phage typing, RAPD, PFGE, ribotyping, and PCR-ribotyping. The highest antibiotic resistance rates were observed for enrofloxacin (18.5%) followed by furazolidone (15.7%), cefoxitin (1.8%), ciprofloxacin, and ampicillin with 0.9% each one, while seven isolates (6.4%) were pan-susceptible. Most strains belonged to the globally disseminated phage type PT4 (n = 74; 69.2%). Additionally, we identified strains belonging to phage types PT1 (n = 19; 17.8%) and PT7a (n = 14; 13.1%). Moreover, our results showed that these four molecular methods indicate similar results showing high similarity (≥ 90%) among S. Enteritidis strains, suggesting that these isolates appear to be from a common ancestor being spread at all stages of the poultry production chain. In summary, the combined molecular approaches of these methods remain a suitable alternative to efficiently subtyping S. Enteritidis in the absence of high-resolution genotyping methods and these results may serve as a baseline study for development of mitigation strategies.
