Distribution of Lewis and Secretor polymorphisms and corresponding CA19‐9 antigen expression in a Chinese population

Abstract: The Lewis (FUT3) and Secretor (FUT2) genes, corresponding to secretion of Lewis ABO (H) histo‐blood group antigen CA19‐9, are highly polymorphic with differences between populations. In this study, the FUT3 and FUT2 genes in 316 Chinese participants were sequenced to detect polymorphisms, and the associated CA19‐9 antigen secretion was also measured. In total, 14 genotypes of FUT3 and 10 genotypes of FUT2 were verified. Le/Le, Le/le59,508 and Le/le59 were the main genotypes of FUT3 with frequencies of 53.2%, 1… Show more

“…We found that 76.7% mothers were Se+Le+ phenotype, 17.2% were Se-Le+, 4.3% were Se+Le-, and just 2 (1.7%) were Se-Le-. The result was similar with a genes polymorphisms study in China [41], which revealed that 9.8% of individuals were the Le-type and 22.5% were the Se-type.…”

“…The sensitivity in detecting pancreatic cancer is ~80% for CA19-9 (9). In the population, ~5-10% of individuals are Lewis antigen negative, with no or low secretion of CA19-9 (10). In a previous study, we showed that Lewis-negative patients had poorer outcome than Lewis-positive patients (11).…”

“…Our results exhibited no significant association between FUT2/3 gene SNP genotypes and CA19‐9 expression. FUT2/3 enzyme activities may influence CA19‐9 serum levels . However, a few reports have examined the association between FUT2/3 polymorphisms and GC .…”

“…Fucosyltransferases 2/3 are genes that encode fucosyltransferases 2/3, and their sequences were first reported by Kelly et al . A recent study demonstrated that the FUT2/3 genotypes are associated with cancer risk as well as with CA19‐9 synthesis and secretion . Individuals lacking FUT3 and/or FUT2 activity would exhibit CA19‐9 tissue or serum levels under the normal range .…”
