Distribution of Hatschekia pagellibogneravei (Copepoda: Hatschekiidae) on the gills of Pagellus bogaraveo (Teleostei: Sparidae) from Madeira, Portugal

Abstract: A population of the gill parasite Hatschekia pagellibogneravei (Hesse, 1878) was studied on one of its sparid fish hosts, the blackspot seabream, Pagellus bogaraveo (Brünnich), off the coast of Madeira island, Portugal, northeast Atlantic. Very high infection levels of this copepod were detected, with no significant seasonal differences. Abundance was negatively correlated with fish size. There were significant differences in the distribution of this copepod among the gill arches of the host, which seem to be … Show more

“…Surprisingly, the 29 parasite species reported for the Azores (excluding Argulus foliaceus described in freshwater fish) were detected in only three marine host species -Aphanopus carbo (21 parasites), Pagellus bogaraveo (6) and Helicolenus dactylopterus (2) - Hermida et al (2013aHermida et al ( , b, 2014, Hermida et al (2012aHermida et al ( , b, 2013. Furthermore, the papers by Hermida and Hermida et al resulted from her PhD studies on the parasites of P. bogaraveo.…”
