Grasshoppers pose a significant threat to agricultural productivity worldwide, causing substantial damage to various crops such as cereals, legumes, orchards, vegetables, grasslands, and forest plantations. This research aimed to study the species diversity of grasshoppers in five selected paddy field locations of Kamrup district, Assam, and assess the efficacy of aqueous extracts from the leaves of Azadirachta indica A. Juss (neem) and Aegle marmelos L. (bael) for controlling the most common grasshopper species, Acrida exaltata, found in the study locations. A total of 36 species of grasshoppers were collected and identified, out of which Acrididae was the most predominant grasshopper family, constituting 77.78% of the total collected species. The experimental results demonstrated abnormal changes in behaviour, including slower movement and increased inactivity among the aqueous extracts treated insects. Both the treated groups showed morphological and behavioural change with the more prominent effects observed from the neem-treated group. Haemolymph analysis revealed the presence of severe deformities in both treated groups, such as the spindle-shaped formation of cells, nuclear membrane disintegration, cell fusion and stacking, cytoplasmic vacuole formation, and cytoplasm degeneration. These findings demonstrate the pesticidal potential of neem and bael extracts against the Acrida exaltata grasshopper species, following its toxic impact on haematological, physiological, and morphological behaviour, suggesting the need for further research on their use as effective and environmentally friendly control measures against grasshopper pest infestations in densely vegetated and paddy fields in the region.

During the present study the total 23 species of insects were discovered belonging to 8 orders of class Insecta, insects belongs to order Hemiptera was greater in number, mostly there were presences or abundance of larvae's of both moths and butterflies were recorded. the species that were recorded are given in (fig. 1)includes Periplaneta Americana, apema pest, ladybird beetel, green vegetable bug, ladybird beetel, specie of lady bird beetle, blue pansy, Nezara viridula, hawk moth larvae, fluffy caterpillar of moth, green bug, beetel, caterpillar, Inchworm, caterpillar, dytiscus marginlis, caterpillar, white fly, caterpillar, cinnbar moth, grasshopper lime butterfly. These insects were mostly recorded during the time of wheat harvesting other types of insects also recorded but not shooted.

Insects are most diverse, successful and dominant taxon of the animal kingdom. They are found in almost every habitat across the globe. It is due to their diverse body size, habit, fecundity, different modes of respiration, food diversity etc. Because of these diverse characteristics, they became an important component of our ecosystem. They have significant influence on agriculture, human health and natural resources. This was the main reason for analysing the status of insects’ diversity across Raipur city. During this study various species of insects were collected and identified for estimating the insect species diversity and abundance in the different types of habitats found in Raipur. Insects were collected from various habitats like public park, gardens, fruit & vegetable market, agricultural fields etc. Total 603 species from 38 families, from 10 orders of insects were obtained during the sampling from January2019 to February 2020. The contributions of different orders were as follows: Lepidoptera (6), Coleoptera (6), Hemiptera (6), Hymenoptera (5), Orthoptera (3), Dermaptera (1), Diptera (6), Odonata (3) and Isoptera (1) and Mantodea(1) were collected. Diptera were having highest species diversity which was followed by Hymenoptera. Biodiversity of insects were highest in gardens and agricultural fields. The diverse habitats present in and around Raipur provide a favorable climate for insects.
