Distribution of ferritin, transferrin and lactoferrin in breast carcinoma tissue.

Abstract: SUMMARY An immunoperoxidase staining technique was used for detecting three major iron binding proteins (ferritin, transferrin and lactoferrin) in 40 breast carcinoma cases and six benign breast proliferative lesions.Ferritin staining was detected mainly in connectival stroma and in histiocytes surrounding neoplastic cells. Few and faint ferritin positivities were also detected in neoplastic cells of 20 carcinoma cases. Transferrin was found inconsistently in myoepithelial cells surrounding normal ductules, or… Show more

“…No obvious clinical correlate was found and more tumours are being examined before meaningful statistical analysis can be performed. The frequency of positivity reported here is in line with the immunocytochemical data of Wurster et al (1980) and Wrba et al (1986) and it is clear that lactoferrin cannot be considered as a marker of benign lesions as suggested by Rossiello et al (1984). Of the five positive cases reported by Charpin et al (1985), two were DCIS.…”

“…By immunohistochemistry, the distribution of these iron-binding proteins has been extensively investigated in normal human tissues (Mason and Taylor 1978). In neoplastic conditions, the presence of transferrin, ferritin and lactoferrin has been studied in breast carcinomas (Rossiello et al 1984) and thyroid tumors (Barresi and Tuccari 1987). Lactoferrin has been demonstrated in well differentiated carcinomas of the parotid gland (Caselitz et al 1981a).…”

“…The localization of iron-binding proteins in neoplastic cells appears to be very intriguing, particularly since transferrin is considered an obligate requirement for growing cells (Rossiello et al 1984). In the current study, we aimed to define the immunohistochemical distribution of three iron-binding proteins in different cell types of a large number of ACCs.…”
