Distribution of elements among minerals of a single (muscovite-) biotite granite sample – an optimal approach and general implications

Abstract: Abstract:The petrography and mineral chemistry of the coarse-grained, weakly porphyritic (muscovite-) biotite Říčany granite (Variscan Central Bohemian Plutonic Complex, Bohemian Massif) were studied in order to assess the distribution of major and trace elements among its minerals, with consequences for granite petrogenesis and availability of geochemical species during supergene processes. It is demonstrated that chemistry-based approaches are the best suited for modal analyses of granites, especially method… Show more

“…The data reduction included the correction for the gas blank, the internal standard and a calibration check, and the data were processed off line in an MS Excel spreadsheet-based program (Zachariáš and Wilkinson 2007). Similar analytical protocol and correction strategy have been used by Strnad et al (2005) and Janoušek et al (2014).…”

“…Or, worse still, it is imprecise or misleading, due to the presence of phenocrysts, fabric, problems with identification of colourless minerals etc. (Janoušek et al 2014). Accordingly, the quantitative modal analyses of the granitoids are seldom reported in recent literature; for example, only about 5 % of the data in the igneous rock database in western North America (NAVDAT) reported its actual mineral contents (Glazner et al 2019a, b).…”

“…Lesní potok is one of 14 catchments in the Czech GEOMON network (Oulehle et al, 2021) and thus has been part of several cross-site comparisons (Bohdalkova et al, 2014;Fottov a & Skorepov a, 1998;Nov ak et al, 2005Nov ak et al, , 2010Oulehle et al, 2008Oulehle et al, , 2017Oulehle et al, , 2021. The catchment is well-characterized in terms of its physical properties (soils, geology, vegetation, hydrology;Janoušek et al, 2014;Navr atil et al, 2003). Lesní potok was the site of studies on beryllium cycling (Navr atil et al, 2002;Skrivan et al, 1993), lead geochemistry (Navr atil et al, 2004), manganese cycling (Navr atil et al, 2007), rare earth elements in vegetation (Špičkov a et al, 2010) and Hg in soils (Navr atil et al, 2014) and stream water (Navr atil et al, 2015).…”
