The three Arctic Calanus species, C. finmarchicus, C. glacialis and C. hyperboreus, are the most important herbivores in Arctic seas in terms of species biomass. They play a key role in the lipid-based energy flux in the Arctic, converting low-energy carbohydrates and proteins in ice algae and phytoplankton into high-energy wax esters. In this paper we review the overwintering strategy, seasonal migration, stage development, life span, feeding strategy, body size, lipid biochemistry and the geographic distribution of the three dominant Calanus species in Arctic waters. We then relate these parameters to other biotic and abiotic factors, such as the timing of the Arctic phytoplankton and ice algae bloom, sea ice cover and climate variability. We also present new data on fatty acid and fatty alcohol content in the three Calanus species in addition to reviewing the available literature on these topics. These data are analysed for species homogeneity and geographic grouping. The dominance of diatom fatty acid trophic markers in the lipids of Calanus underpins the importance of diatoms as Arctic primary producers, even if dinoflagellates and Phaeocystis pouchetii can also be important food sources for the calanoid copepods. We conclude that the Arctic Calanus species are herbivores, engineered to feed on the Arctic bloom, and that the timing of the bloom is the most important factor in determining the life strategies of the individual species.

A B S T R A C TThe concentration of greenhouse gases, including nitrous oxide (N 2 O), methane (CH 4 ), and compounds such as total dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP t ), along with other oceanographic variables were measured in the icecovered Arctic Ocean within the Eurasian Basin (EAB). The EAB is affected by the perennial ice-pack and has seasonal microalgal blooms, which in turn may stimulate microbes involved in trace gas cycling. Data collection was carried out on board the LOMROG III cruise during the boreal summer of 2012. Water samples were collected from the surface to the bottom layer (reaching 4300 m depth) along a South-North transect (SNT), from 82.19°N, 8.75°E to 89.26°N, 58.84°W, crossing the EAB through the Nansen and Amundsen Basins. The Polar Mixed Layer and halocline waters along the SNT showed a heterogeneous distribution of N 2 O, CH 4 and DMSP t , fluctuating between 42-111 and 27-649% saturation for N 2 O and CH 4, respectively; and from 3.5 to 58.9 nmol L −1 for DMSP t . Spatial patterns revealed that while CH 4 and DMSP t peaked in the Nansen Basin, N 2 O was higher in the Amundsen Basin. In the Atlantic Intermediate Water and Arctic Deep Water N 2 O and CH 4 distributions were also heterogeneous with saturations between 52% and 106% and 28% and 340%, respectively. Remarkably, the Amundsen Basin contained less CH 4 than the Nansen Basin and while both basins were mostly under-saturated in N 2 O. We propose that part of the CH 4 and N 2 O may be microbiologically consumed via methanotrophy, denitrification, or even diazotrophy, as intermediate and deep waters move throughout EAB associated with the overturning water mass circulation. This study contributes to baseline information on gas distribution in a region that is increasingly subject to rapid environmental changes, and that has an important role on global ocean circulation and climate regulation.

Plankton samples and oceanographic data were obtained during transect studies across fishing banks over the West Greenland shelf areas in June 1999, May, and July 2000. The hypothesis that larval shrimp are linked to the behaviour of hydrographic fronts was tested by determining whether larval shrimp abundance was linked to plankton distributions, species composition and primary productivity. We found six pelagic developmental stages (ZI-ZVI) in two species of Pandalus larvae. P. borealis was the most abundant species in all stages from ZII to ZVI. The smaller P. montagui larvae were slightly more advanced in development than P. borealis, suggesting later hatching or longer development time for P. borealis larvae. In May, high concentrations of newly hatched ZI larvae were caught near the coast and at fjord stations. In June and July, larvae in development stage ZIV dominated the catches. The two species showed minor differences in larval distribution across banks and between transects, indicating a wide larval dispersal and a relatively short hatching period. We found no relationship between indices of larval shrimp abundance and the T-S characteristics of water masses, chlorophyll a concentrations or zooplankton abundance (species, groups or sizes classes). Data from two satellite tracked SVP buoys was used to calculate a net northward drift of about 3.1 km d -1 or 200-400 km during the pelagic life of a larval cohort. Difference in year-class strength was attributed to differences in the environmental conditions and the larval transport patterns. We suggest that coupled physical-biological models should be developed to investigate the climatic impact on distribution and recruitment variability of northern shrimp in West Greenland waters.
