Distribution of Cortical Benzodiazepine Receptor Binding in Right-Handed Healthy Humans: A Voxel-Based Statistical Analysis of Iodine 123 Iomazenil SPECT with Partial Volume Correction

Abstract: BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: CBR imaging is highly susceptible to a PVE produced by morphologic changes in the brain related to aging and brain laterality. We assessed the influence of PVE produced by regional age-related changes in gray matter volume on I-123 iomazenil SPECT and elucidated the age-related changes in human CBR binding by using PVE-corrected SPECT images.

“…To generate VOI for GM and/or WM, binary mask images for the GM and/or WM were created using the segmented images in the native space of each subject. The binary mask image boundary was set at 35% of the maximum GM or WM concentration as described in previous studies [22], [23].…”

“…PVC of SPECT images was performed using a method similar to that described for our previous study. [4][5][6] 3D T1-weighted MR images were first resliced into transaxial sections, segmented into grey matter and other compartments, and then spatially normalized using the "new segment" function of Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM) 8 (Wellcome Department of Imaging Neuroscience: http://www.fil.ion.ucl.ac.uk/spm/). By this process, segmented tissue maps, including grey and white matter maps in original coordinates, normalized segmented tissue maps, and spatial normalization matrices were generated.…”

“…Correlation analyses between the SPECT images and the cognitive test scores were also performed using SPM8. The resultant T-score maps obtained from the SPM analysis were analyzed based on the Automated Anatomical Labeling (AAL) 9 using an in-house tool, 5,10 in order to evaluate the distribution and extension of regions with significant changes in 123 I-IMZ uptake.…”

“…There are several reports on age-related changes occurring in cerebral GABAA-R distribution in rats [11][12][13], but the results are inconsistent. Regarding the human brain, there are few studies related to these changes [14,15]. Therefore, to accurately evaluate functional abnormalities associated with various neurological and psychiatric diseases, it is essential to clarify age-related changes in GABAA-R distribution in normal subjects.…”
