Distribution of constitutive heterochromatin in two species of triatomines: Triatoma lenti Sherlock and Serafim (1967) and Triatoma sherlocki Papa, Jurberg, Carcavallo, Cerqueira & Barata (2002)

Abstract: Triatoma lenti and Triatoma sherlocki are hemipterans that belong to the brasiliensis subcomplex. In triatomines, the constitutive heterochromatin pattern is species-specific and allows, in many cases, for the grouping of species. Thus, we cytogenetically analyzed T. sherlocki and T. lenti using C-banding, and we compared the results with previous ones obtained in other species of the brasiliensis subcomplex. Both species were found to have a male diploid chromosome number of 22 chromosomes (2n=20A+XY) with he… Show more

“…The disposition of constitutive heterochromatin in Heteroptera chromatin and chromosomes is an important tool in taxonomic and evolutionary studies, and in population genetics (Crossa et al, 2002;Panzera et al, 1992Panzera et al, , 1997Panzera et al, , 2004Gómez-Palacio et al, 2008;Alevi et al, 2013Alevi et al, , 2014aAlevi et al, ,b, 2015aGabriela et al, 2013).…”

“…However, we emphasize that T. lenti and T. petrochiae were not used in any of the phylogenetic analyses described above (perhaps due to difficulties in sample collection). Cytogenetic data (Alevi et al, 2012b(Alevi et al, , 2013b(Alevi et al, , 2014a and experimental hybrid crosses (Mendonça et al, 2014) suggest that T. lenti can be considered as a member of this subcomplex. Monteiro et al (2004) found independent mutations on the same sites of the Cyt b gene during phylogenetic reconstruction.…”

“…However, experimental crosses , molecular (Mendonça et al, 2009;Gardim et al, 2014), enzymatic (Costa et al, 1997), and cytogenetic (Panzera et al, 2010(Panzera et al, , 2012Alevi et al, 2012aAlevi et al, , 2013aSucci et al, 2014) techniques have been used as important tools to aid in the classification of species.…”
