Distribution of Blood Types and ABO Gene Frequencies in Egypt

Abstract: ABO blood group was first discovered by Landsteiner in 1901. Currently, there are more than 30 blood group systems, but ABO system remains the most clinically important of all blood groups in transfusion practice. The ABO blood group system antibodies are naturally occurring without any exposure to RBCs through transfusion or pregnancy, unlike the other blood group systems. “…The distribution of blood types in the current study; A>B>O>AB were comparable to the healthy Egyptian population distribution of A>O>B>AB and Rh+>Rh–. 17 In this work the A blood type was more common in RA, JIA, SSc, SpA, and BD patients as in Çildağ et al study. 2 The most common blood type for FMF, SLE, SSc, and SS was type O, but AB in a similar Turkish work.…”

“…The Turkish (n=35), Palestinian (n=68), Syrian (n=430), Lebanese (n=12), Egyptian (n=1130), and Afghan (n=74) showed frequency of A > O > B > AB. In Turkish, Syrian, and Egyptian, our results agree with previous studies [13,[66][67][68][69]. In Palestinian and Lebanese previous works, the frequency was O>A>B>AB in some regions and A>O>B>AB in other regions [70][71][72].…”

“…However, in Karachi, Pakistan, the overall blood groups frequencies of ABO blood groups were O>B>A>AB [7]. In studies carried out in Turkey, Egypt, China and Switzerland revealed that Blood type A is the most common and the overall blood groups frequencies of ABO blood groups were A>O>B>AB, whereas in Thailand, the overall blood groups frequencies of ABO blood groups were A>B>O>AB [15,[22][23][24][25].…”
