Distribution of biglycan and decorin in rat dental tissue

Abstract: Biglycan and decorin are small leucine-rich proteoglycans that play several biological and structural roles in different tissues and organs. Several reports have indicated that biglycan participates in odontoblast and ameloblast differentiation and in the calcification process. In the present study we show that the expression of biglycan changes from within the ameloblasts and odontoblasts to the extracellular space according to the stage of animal development. In predentin and in the pulp space, however, bigl… Show more

“…This suggests that biglycan was involved in odontoblast differentiation, 16 but that its expression decreases in mature odontoblasts. 4 Consistent with these observations, our results demonstrate a weak expression of this proteoglycan in the odontoblastic layer.…”

“…The presence of these proteoglycans was detected immunohistochemically in human and animal pulp, and in dental germs under development. 4,6,16,17 The specificities of these antibodies were previously described 18 and the use of chondroitinase ABC was imperative to remove the chondroitin sulfate chains and expose the epitopes for antibodies linkage.…”

“…In the craniofacial region, Bgn and Dcn are present in teeth (22,28), periodontal tissues (21), nasal cartilage (29), eye (8), temporomandibular joint (18), the developing mandible (16,35) and the developing calvaria (35). Despite their prevalence in numerous tissues of the craniofacial complex, little is known about their function in these tissues.…”
