“…In Algeria, the wood mouse is distributed from sea level up to 2,000 m, from the coast to mountainous zones, and in several types of habitats (Kowalski, 1985;Kowalski et Rzebik-Kowalska, 1991;Khidas, 1993;Hamdine and Poitevin, 1994). As previously reported, A. sylvaticus is the commonest species in high-altitude forests and mountains (Khidas, 1993, Khidas et al, 2002Khammes, 2008). Despite this wide-ranging distribution, no surveys of helminth parasite have yet been conducted on this rodent species in Algeria.…”

“…The wood mouse can survive cold winters, which are a limiting factor for M. spretus, which, in contrast, presents marked adaptations to aridity (Sicard et al, 1985). Within the overlapping area of their ranges, the 2 species often co-occur in landscapes such as cultivated lands and open habitats in Great Kabylia, Algeria (Khidas, 1993;Khidas et al, 2002), holm oak forests in Spain (Muñoz & Bonal, 2008), and more closed habitats such as the garrigues of southern France , where they are often caught in the same trap lines Khidas et al, 2002) and sometimes even in the same trap (J. Cassaing, pers.…”

“…obs.). To summarize, M. spretus occurs mainly in semi-open habitats characterized by tree and/or shrubby cover with a high-coverage herbaceous layer Fons et al, 1988;Khidas, 1993), whereas the wood mouse is ubiquitous in Europe and Northern Africa; throughout its range, A. sylvaticus is known mainly as a forest mammal, but it is opportunistic and also colonizes open areas where M. spretus occurs.…”
