Abstract. Transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) are a class of gel particles produced mainly by microorganisms. TEP play an important role in the ocean carbon cycle, affect sea&#8211;air gas exchange and contribute to organic aerosols. The first step to evaluate the TEP influence in these processes is the prediction of TEP occurrence in the ocean. Yet, little is known about the physical and biological variables that control their abundance, particularly in the open ocean. Here we describe horizontal TEP distribution in the surface waters along a North&#8211;South transect in the Atlantic Ocean during October&#8211;November 2014. Physical and biological variables were run in parallel. Two main regions were separated due to remarkable differences; the open Atlantic Ocean (OAO, n&#8201;=&#8201;30), and the Southwestern Atlantic Shelf (SWAS, n&#8201;=&#8201;10). TEP concentration in the entire transect ranged from 18.3 to 446.8&#8201;&#181;g XG&#8201;eq&#8201;L&#8722;1 and averaged 117.1&#8201;&#177;&#8201;119.8&#8201;&#181;g XG&#8201;eq&#8201;L&#8722;1, with the maximum concentrations in the edge of the Canary Coastal Upwelling (CU, n&#8201;=&#8201;1) and the SWAS, but with the highest TEP to chlorophyll a (TEP&#8201;:&#8201;Chl a) ratios at the OAO (CU excluded, average 183&#8201;&#177;&#8201;56) and CU (1760.4). TEP were significantly and positively related to Chl a and phytoplankton biomass, expressed in terms of C, along the entire transect. In the OAO, TEP were positively related to some phytoplankton groups, mainly to Synechococcus, and negatively related to the previous 24&#8211;hours averaged solar radiation, suggesting the predominance of TEP breaking above the induction of TEP production by UV radiation. Multiple regression analyses showed the combined positive effect of phytoplankton and heterotrophic prokaryotes (HP) on TEP distribution in this region. In the SWAS, TEP were positively related to high nucleic acid prokaryotic cells (HNA) and total phytoplankton biomass, but not with any particular phytoplankton group. TEP constituted an important portion of the particulate organic carbon (POC) pool in the entire transect (28.1&#8211;109.8&#8201;%), and was generally higher than the phytoplankton and HP fraction, highlighting the importance of TEP in the cycle of organic matter in the ocean.

Exploring biogeographic patterns of bacterioplankton communities across global estuaries

Estuaries provide an ideal niche to study structure and function of bacterioplankton communities owing to the presence of a multitude of environmental stressors. Bacterioplankton community structures from nine global estuaries were compared to understand their broad‐scale biogeographic patterns. Bacterioplankton community structure from four estuaries of Sundarbans, namely Mooriganga, Thakuran, Matla, and Harinbhanga, was elucidated using Illumina sequencing. Bacterioplankton communities from these estuaries were compared against available bacterioplankton sequence data from Columbia, Delaware, Jiulong, Pearl, and Hangzhou estuaries. All nine estuaries were dominated by Proteobacteria. Other abundant phyla included Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Cyanobacteria, Planctomycetes, and Verrucomicrobia. The abundant bacterial phyla showed a ubiquitous presence across the estuaries. At class level, the overwhelming abundance of Gammaproteobacteria in the estuaries of Sundarbans and Columbia estuary clearly stood out amidst high abundance of Alphaproteobacteria observed in the other estuaries. Abundant bacterial families including Rhodobacteriaceae, Shingomonadaceae, Acidobacteriaceae, Vibrionaceae, and Xanthomondaceae also showed ubiquitous presence in the studied estuaries. However, rare taxa including Chloroflexi, Tenericutes, Nitrospirae, and Deinococcus‐Thermus showed clear site‐specific distribution patterns. Such distribution patterns were also reinstated by nMDS ordination plots. Such clustering patterns could hint toward the potential role of environmental parameters and substrate specificity which could result in distinct bacterioplankton communities at specific sites. The ubiquitous presence of abundant bacterioplankton groups along with their strong correlation with surface water temperature and dissolved nutrient concentrations indicates the role of such environmental parameters in shaping bacterioplankton community structure in estuaries. Overall, studies on biogeographic patters of bacterioplankton communities can provide interesting insights into ecosystem functioning and health of global estuaries.

Exopolysaccharides (EPS) play an important role in the carbon flux and may be directly linked to phytoplankton and microphytobenthos production, most notably in estuarine systems. However the temporal and spatial dynamics of estuarine EPS are still not well understood, nor how primary productivity triggers this variability at these different scales. The aim of this study was to investigate the primary productivity of phytoplankton and EPS dynamics in the Seine estuary over a tidal cycle in three different haline zones over two contrasted seasons. The other objectives was to investigate the origin of pools of soluble carbohydrates (S-EPS) and transparent exopolymeric particles (TEP) in phytoplankton, microphytobenthos or other compartments. High frequency measurements of productivity were made in winter and summer 2015. Physical and chemical parameters, biomass and EPS were measured at hourly intervals in sub-surface waters and just above the water sediment-interface. Our results confirmed that high frequency measurements improve the accuracy of primary productivity estimations and associated carbon fluxes in estuaries. The photosynthetic parameters were shown to be strongly controlled by salinity and by the concentrations of suspended particle matter at the smallest temporal and at spatial scales. At these scales, our results showed an inverse relationship between EPS concentrations and biomass and productivity, and a positive relationship with sediment resuspension. Additionally, the distribution of EPS appears to be linked to hydrodynamics with the tide at daily scale and with the winter at seasonal scale. At spatial scale, the maximum turbidity zone played an important role in the distribution of TEP. Our results suggest that, in the Seine estuary, between 9% and 33% of the S-EPS pool in the water column can be attributed to phytoplankton excretion, while only 0.4%-1.6% (up to 6.14% in exceptional conditions) originates from the microphytobenthos compartments. Most EPS was attributed to remobilization of detrital carbon pools in the maximum turbidity zone and in the sediment or allochthonous origin.
