Distribution Characteristics and Combined Effect of Polymorphisms Affecting Alcohol Consumption Behaviour in the Hungarian General and Roma Populations

Abstract: Differences in alcohol consumption habits between the Hungarian Roma and Hungarian general populations do not appear to be linked to genetic constitution, this behaviour may occur as a result of different cultural values and environmental exposures. Population-based measures to tackle the fundamental drivers of consumption, which take account of cultural acceptability, are needed to reduce harmful alcohol consumption in the Roma population.

This is in line with findings on other ethnic disparities in indicating complex reproductive segregation patterns faced by minority ethnic groups (Bhopal 2015;Dressler et al 2005;Smith 2000).…”

“…Accordingly, and alike for other ethnic health-disparities (Diez Roux 2012; Dressler et al 2005), the insignificance of genetic influences behind poor Roma health status has been confirmed empirically. The only genetic susceptibilities identified in Roma are higher frequencies of a handful of gene-alleles causing rare diseases, peaking in some localities due to total social (reproductive) segregation from neighbouring Chapter 7 populations (Diószegi et al 2017;Fiatal et al 2016;Kalaydjieva et al 2001;Martinez-Cruz et al 2016). Let's emphasize that this is despite a previous disproportionate focus of research specifically on possible genetic influences (Hajioff and McKee 2000;Zeman et al 2003).…”

“…Similar results have been described for Slovak patients undergoing coronary angiography (34) -in this study, authors also report lower alcohol intake for Gypsies/Roma subjects in comparison with the majority population. Finally, the identical drinking pattern was observed in the Hungarian Gypsies/Roma population (32).…”

“…In summary, in comparison with the majority population, lower alcohol intake in the Gypsies/Roma minority has been reported in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary, but not in Gypsies/ Roma minorities inhabiting Western European regions (32). We can however speculate that the much lower socioeconomic status of this minority (which is also valid for the majority population) in non-Western European regions could be one of the reasons for this difference.…”

“…Heritability in alcohol dependence is independent of gender and is estimated to range from 40 to 70% based on twin and adoption studies [ 10 , 48 ]. Most of the genes and their polymorphisms that have been linked to alcohol dependence both in a predisposing as well as a protective way are related to alcohol metabolism and neurotransmission [ 7 , 46 ].…”
