Microplastics (MPs) provide persistent contaminants in freshwaters and the oceans from anthropogenic sources worldwide. MP contamination in ecosystems has emerged as a global environmental issue. While increasing research focused on the ecological consequences of plastic pollution, health-related implications of plastic pollution have been somewhat overlooked. In this study, we evaluated the effects of polyethylene MP contamination on microbial, physical, and biochemical characteristics of the hydrothermal vent crab Xenograpsus testudinatus over a 7-day food exposure. Different concentrations (0%, 0.3%, 0.6%, and 1.0%) of polyethylene MPs were used for feed intake experiments. Oxford Nanopore Technologies’ full-length sequencing of the 16S rDNA gene was used to explore the changes of the microbial composition in vent crab tissues. At the phylum level, the content of Firmicutes significantly decreased in the digestive gland tissue. Furthermore, the predicted functions of genes in the microbial community were significantly influenced by MPs. In contrast, there were eight functions in gill and 11 functions in digestive gland tissues identified at low and high intake levels. The dominant functions of methylotrophy, dark thiosulfate oxidation, dark oxidation of sulfur compounds, aromatic hydrocarbon degradation, and aromatic compound degradation were significantly increased at high intake levels in the digestive gland. These findings indicate that MP ingestion causes not only a short-term decrease in energy intake for crustaceans but also a change in microbial communities and their functions. This study provided a first account on the toxicity of MPs in a hydrothermal vent crab to aid in the assessment of health risks provided by polyethylene MP to marine invertebrates.

Studying the growth pattern of crabs is essential to understand their ecological roles in populations and benthic communities; such studies on a high commercial-value crab in Asia, Sand crab Ovalipes punctatus, are scarce, and no studies are available for Korea. Therefore, growth and population characteristics of O. punctatus in coastal waters of Korea were investigated. The estimated allometric growth between the sexes showed significant differences in all morphometric measurements. The carapace width-chela length showed positive and negative allometric growth in males and females, respectively; carapace width-abdominal width and orbital spine width showed positive and negative relative growth, respectively, in both sexes. Sexual dimorphism was present in all measured traits. In the results of the Hasselbad’s normal separation method, two modes were observed from September to December. Overall, the growth parameters of males were higher than those of females. Growth was slow for females in August and males in December. The modified von Bertalanffy growth curves indicated asymptotic growth in all sexes. O. punctatus exhibited sex-specific growth strategies and a distinct peak in the recruitment rate in September after the spawning season (May–July). The study results can inform on resource management and policy establishment regarding sand crabs in Korea.

Yilan Bay is in the northeast corner of Taiwan at the junction of the East China Sea (ECS) and the Pacific Ocean. This study clarified the composition of water masses adjacent to Yilan Bay. The upper seawater in the bay is characterized by Kuroshio surface water, Taiwan warm current water, and shelf mixed water masses. The flow field in this area is mainly determined by the inter-actions among the northeastern Taiwan countercurrent, Kuroshio Current (KC), and tidal currents. The fall season is the main rainfall period in Yilan Bay, which causes a large amount of river runoff and a further increase in chlorophyll concentration, and the salinity of the upper water layer is observed much lower than other seasons. Water with a high chlorophyll concentration can flow into the ECS with ebb currents and the KC with ebb and flood currents. Combining hourly geosynchronous ocean color imager data and numerical simulation flow field helps us understand short-term changes of chlorophyll concentration. The trajectories of the drifters and virtual particle simulations help us understand the sources and movement of ocean currents in Yilan Bay. The seasonal swing of the KC path outside the bay is an important factor affecting the flow field and hydrological characteristics.
