Distribution and Prevalence of the Australian Non-Pathogenic Rabbit Calicivirus Is Correlated with Rainfall and Temperature

Abstract: BackgroundAustralia relies heavily on rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) for the biological control of introduced European wild rabbits Oryctolagus cuniculus, which are significant economic and environmental pests. An endemic non-pathogenic rabbit calicivirus termed RCV–A1 also occurs in wild rabbits in Australian and provides partial protection against lethal RHDV infection, thus interfering with effective rabbit control. Despite its obvious importance for rabbit population management, little is known a… Show more

“…Infection with this benign relative of RHDV can provide partial and transient cross protection against RHDV infection by reducing the severity of RHD, leading to increased survival rates (35). The distribution of RCV-A1 is limited to the more temperate and wetter climate zones of southeastern Australia (36). Notably, all recent RHDV isolates from the southeastern states cluster in the same lineage (Fig.…”

“…Much of the environment in central Australia is comprised of arid and semiarid land with more continuous populations of rabbits (37). Furthermore, the blowfly and bush fly, which are vectors for RHDV transmission (36), similarly maintain more continuous populations in these arid regions. Together, these factors would promote greater viral genetic mixing, in turn increasing viral diversity in South Australia (37).…”

“…Although the cross-protection conveyed by antibodies against RCV-A1 is both partial and transient (28,33), it is impeding effective rabbit control efforts in Australia. RCV-A1 is found predominantly in the more temperate regions of Australia with higher than average rainfall, where RHDV has proven to be less effective in rabbit control (9,(34)(35)(36).…”

“…2) (9,35) can in part be explained by differences in mechanisms of transmission. RCV-A1 (and other nonpathogenic lagoviruses) are likely spread exclusively via the fecal-oral route (10,35).…”
