BACKGROUND: The East African Rift Valley (EARV) area is characterized by an intense volcanic activity, which largely influences the nature of soils, ground and surface waters causing a transfer of fluoride from volcanic emissions to the environment. Field experiments were conducted in fluorine-contaminated areas of Ngarenanyuki (Arumeru district) in north Tanzania. In order to evaluate the potential fluoride exposure from diet and the related health risk for the local population, the content of fluoride in soil and plant tissues was assessed, focusing on the edible portions (leaves, fruits or seeds) of the main cultivated and consumed food crops in the area. RESULTS: Average fluoride contents of 8.0, 11.4, 11.3 and 14.2 mg kg −1 of dry matter were observed respectively for maize (Zea mays L.), tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.), bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and kale (Brassica sp. pl.) edible parts. The cumulative estimated average daily dose (EADD) ranged from 0.026 to 0.165 mg F d −1 kg −1 among different rural population groups and considering two different hypotheses of absorption fraction (75% or 100%), i.e. the amount of fluoride that is absorbed during the digestion process. The associated hazard index (HI) values varied from 0.43 to 2.75. CONCLUSIONS: Considering the dietary habits of the local population, the outcomes of the present study suggest that the investigated crops can substantially contribute to fluoride related diseases, especially in earlier ages.

The lower Gangetic Plain in West Bengal, India, has previously been reported to have groundwater fluoride (F − ) contamination and its hazard; however, more information was needed about the precise location of contamination. The current study highlighted these knowledge gaps covering the toxicity of F − through groundwater by emphasizing the role of hydrogeochemical attributions in F − mobilization, people's socioeconomic behavior, and assessing the possible health risks of the local population. Approximately, 10% of groundwater samples exceeded the recommended value of F − with a moderate contamination factor. The groundwater is highly saline (Na−Cl type) in nature. The intermediate zone between the area of 'rock dominance' and 'precipitation dominance' controlled the leaching of F − from host silicate minerals to groundwater. The saturation index established geogenic activity as the responsible factor and found silicate weathering mineral muscovite for F − leaching in groundwater. The average utility cost for 20 L of safe drinking water was US$ 7.58 per month from affordable households. Total hazard quotient (THQ) was observed maximum for infants and significant ingestion rate (IR), body weight (BW), and body surface area (SA) were the responsible factors for the studied age groups. Fluoride-safe drinking water supply strategies are a necessary step in the studied area.

In response to the current problems of serious pollution of typical organic substances in groundwater systems at petrochemical production sites, high cost of detection equipment, non-portability, low accuracy, and poor stability, a smart sensor for benzene and PAHs was proposed based on the fluorescence analysis method. The relationship curve between concentration and absorbance was derived using Lambert’s law from the different wavelengths and peaks of the absorbed light of different substances and was used to detect the concentration of organic substances. The experimental results showed that the online organic detection sensor based on fluorescence analysis had good stability for the detection of benzene and benzo(b)fluoranthene in groundwater systems at petrochemical production sites and could detect organic concentrations accurately and efficiently, providing data support for environmental protection and wastewater treatment. The method was low cost, simple in structure, high in detection accuracy, and good in interference immunity to meet analytical testing requirements.
