Distribution and morphology of the sea lamprey from the Balkan coast of the Adriatic Sea

Abstract: In contrast to the Apennine Peninsula coast, the relatively rare occurrence of sea lampreys Petromyzon marinus in the Balkan Peninsula (eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea) is probably due to the closeness of the steep mountains causing unsuitable hydrological conditions of streams and impeded access to the coast. Most specimens are probably represented by invaders carried from the Mediterranean and other regions of the Adriatic Sea. Morphology was similar to that recorded for the sea lampreys from other geograp… Show more

“…As is the case for population dynamics, current knowledge on the (Table 4). Petromyzon marinus is scarce, even rare, in the centre, north and east of the continent, where other lamprey species are more abundant (Holčík 1986;Holčík et al 2004;OSPAR 2009;Thiel et al 2009;Ç evik et al 2010). It can be found in several rivers in Ireland and the UK, in some specific cases, having densities close to those recorded in north-western Spain (Table 4).…”
