Distribution and genetic structure of the Japanese wood pigeon (Columba janthina) endemic to the islands of East Asia

Abstract: The Japanese wood pigeon (Columba janthina) is endemic to the islands of East Asia and it is included in the Japanese and Asian Red Lists because of its narrow habitat range that is restricted to mature forests on small islands and because of the destruction of these habitats. We examined the genetic structure of Columba janthina by studying 463 base pairs of the mitochondrial control region sequences. We analyzed 154 samples from eight populations and identified 27 haplotypes.

“…The Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura), which uses similar habitat as the Collared Dove, exhibited fairly low levels of mtDNA polymorphism and a shallow phylogeographic structure. Another example of mtDNA analysis of the distribution and genetic structure in a pigeon species is the Japanese Wood Pigeon (Columba janthina), where levels of gene flow between populations were measured and conservation priorities were derived (Seki et al, 2007). Although the population of Collared Dove is increasing globally, there is an ongoing decrease in many countries at the same time (BirdLife International, 2015).…”

“…Fifty entries of sequence data derived from mitochondrial DNA are registered in NCBI "Nucleotide" database: 43 Dloop (Seki, 2006;Seki et al, 2007; Unpublished AB615362, AB615361, AB615360, AB615359, AB615358, AB615357, AB615356 and AB698856), and seven COI sequences (Saitoh et al, 2015). There are no entries of whole-genome sequence data in the "Genome" database.…”
