“…To date, L. rigidum resistance has been reported across 11 herbicide modes of action in 12 countries (Heap, ), with surveys in Australia, Spain and the United States revealing the widespread occurrence of herbicide‐resistant Lolium spp. (Owen et al ., ; Loureiro et al ., ; Rauch et al ., ).…”

“…Apart from being extensively cultivated in southern Australia, this plant species is also managed as a cover crop for reducing soil losses in erosion-prone crops, particularly olive groves in southern Spain (Alcántara-de la Cruz et al, 2016b). Rigid ryegrass is ranked among the weeds exhibiting most reported cases of herbicide resistance (Heap, 2017) and, currently, resistant populations appear to be highly frequent in surveyed countries, including Australia (Owen et al, 2007) and Spain (Loureiro et al, 2010), among others (Kaundun et al, 2011; Bostamam et al, 2012). First reports of herbicide resistance in this weed species date back to the early 1980s with ACCase- and ALS-inhibiting herbicides being involved (Heap and Knight, 1982).…”

“…rigidum has evolved resistance to 11 herbicide modes of action in 12 countries [ 3 ]. Surveys conducted in Australia [ 4 6 ], USA [ 7 ] and Spain [ 8 , 9 ] have revealed widespread occurrence of herbicide-resistant Lolium species, with biotypes resistant to almost all herbicides available for its control, including biotypes with cross- and multiple-resistances. This situation complicates its management and threatens the productivity and sustainability of current cereal farming systems in these countries.…”
