Distribution and direct radiative forcing of carbonaceous and sulfate aerosols in an interactive size‐resolving aerosol–climate model

Abstract: [1] A multimode, two-moment aerosol model has been incorporated in the NCAR CAM3 to develop an interactive aerosol-climate model and to study the impact of anthropogenic aerosols on the global climate system. Currently, seven aerosol modes, namely three for external sulfate and one each for external black carbon (BC), external organic carbon (OC), sulfate/BC mixture (MBS; with BC core coated by sulfate shell), and sulfate/OC mixture (MOS; a uniform mixture of OC and sulfate) are included in the model. Both mas… Show more

“…Many global models enhance light absorption by BC particles due to coating by secondary components (e.g., Jacobson, 2001;Chung and Seinfeld, 2002;Kim et al, 2008). The present results, indicating a neutral or negative relationship between the SAC and the amount of particle mass loading, suggest that light absorption by BC may not be enhanced with increasing processing in the atmosphere.…”

“…sorption, the aerosol absorption optical depth (AAOD), is generally underestimated by models compared to values retrieved by AERONET (Bond et al, 2013;Koch et al, 2009;Kim et al, 2008;Klingmüller et al, 2014). The sources of discrepancy are not well understood.…”

“…The model results have been compared with satellite, surface, and aircraft measurements. A good agreement between modeled and observed data is seen in most of these comparisons except for events clearly under influences of episodic heavy pollution plumes in subgrid scale that could not be well represented by the model (Kim et al, 2008). The AOD and AAOD of anthropogenic aerosols at each model grid are calculated by combining contributions from all the aerosol modes.…”

“…The calculation is done based on 3-year means of modeled results. The new addition to the work of Kim et al (2008) is the adoption of a monthly-varied biofuel emission of BC and OC. The BC biofuel inventory is from the monthly BC biomass burning data of the Global Emission Inventory Activity (GEIA) (http://www.geiacenter.org).…”
