Distribution and conservation of Acomys cilicicus (Mammalia: Rodentia) in Turkey

Abstract: Later Kummerloeve (1975) reported it as a member of the cahirinus-dimidiatus group. However, Spitzenberger (1978) compared morphological peculiarities of specimens from Silifke with those of A. nesiotes from Cyprus and A. minous from Crete and classified the Silifke specimens as Acomys cilicicus based on the differences in incisors, molar characteristics, hind foot, and body measurements. Though this recognition, Doğramacı (1989) and Harrison and Bates (1991) reported the species in Turkey as A.

“…Observing the current distribution of this endemic rodent species might be dramatic evidence of human influence on biodiversity. In view of the fact that expected distribution of SDM is cover from Mersin to northwest of Syria, however presence data of Çetintaş, Matur (5) show that the species has two populations in Mersin (in the area between Silifke and Erdemli). In addition to current modelling results, suitable environmental space measurements (Fig.…”

“…Among 65 rodent species recorded in Turkey (Kryštufek and Vohralík, 2005, 2009; Yiğit et al ., 2006, 2016; Wilson et al ., 2016, 2017), six of them belonging to genus Meriones ( M. persicus, M. tristrami, M. vinogradovi , M. crassus, M. libycus, M. dahli ) playing important role as reservoir animal in different countries (Saliba and Oumeish, 1999), are available in most regions of Turkey except Black Sea and Marmara regions (Yiğit et al ., 2006). One endemic species classified in Acomys genus ( A. cilicicus ) lives only around Silifke and Erdemli towns of Mersin province (Çetintaş et al ., 2017), where CL caused by L. tropica is endemic. The wide-spreading of these small wild mammals in many areas enhancing the risk for human and canine leishmaniasis, and keeping the circulation of the parasite in nature.…”

“…Acomys cilicicus is known as the Asia Minor, or Turkish spiny mouse since the back of both males and females are covered with coarse, inflexible spine-like hairs. The species is only known from Turkey's south coast, the type locality (Çetintaş et al, 2017;Amori et al, 2008). The taxon is a species of rodent in the family of Muridae (Musser and Carleton, 2005).…”
